Callsign Construction

Each call sign has two letters prefix(HL, DS, DT, D7-D9, 6K-6M) and one, two or three letters suffix separated by a numeral(1-5) indicating the geographic region and 9 for U.S. personnel in republic of Korea, 0 for club station.

Korean Amateur Radio Licenses

There are four different operating class licenses involved with amateur radio in Korea. They are 3th class phone, 3th class, 2nd class, 1st class. Each license class offers different operating privileges. The requirements needed for an Amateur radio license in Korea depends on each class. There are two types of tests that are administered, they are theory and code(CW).

KARL Awards Program

1. KARL awards is available to all amateur radio stations and SWLs worldwide.

2. Contacts must be made after february 3, 1959.

3. Contacts with HL9(The station for U.S. personnel in Republic of Korea) will not be acceptable

4. Applicants need to hold QSL cards for QSOs claimed.

5. Specialty certificates are available for a variety of different bands and modes.

6. Applications must be accompanied by a declaration signed by any two licensed amateurs. Otherwise, You have to send your application with QSL card concerned to KARL. ( You can get specified application forms html, or  text)

7. A fee of 8 IRCs(1,500won)will be charged per award and 5 IRCs(1,000Won) will be charged for sticker. If QSL cards are submitted, sufficient fund for return postage will also be required. ( If you need current exchange rate click here)

1. HLA (HL AWARD)
My be claimed for having contacted(heard) and received required QSL cards from Amateur Radio Station located in any call areas. There are 5 different class.
CLASS K : requires 5 QSL

CLASS O : requires 10 QSL

CLASS R : requires 20 QSL

CLASS E : requires 30 QSL

CLASS A : requires 50 QSL

Endorsement stickers will be awarded as additional every 50 QSL are granted.


2. AKA (All Korea Award)
May be claimed for having contacted (heard) and received QSL cards from an amateur station located in each of the 6 call areas (1-5, 0).

3. APA (All Province Award)
May be claimed for having contacted (heard) and received QSL cards from an amateur station located in each of the Seoul Metropolis, 5 Megalopolis ( Pusan, Taegu, Guwangju, Incheon, Taejeon) and 9 provinces.
 

4. KDN (Korea District Number Award)

May be claimed for having contacted (heard) and received a QSL card from amateur station located in each of at least 50 different City, Gun or Gu of Korea. (click here to see Korean Administrative District System)

KDN 100, 150, 200, 250 and all KDN will be issued as separate awards.    A list of QSL card should be arranged in order of KDN number, however names of city may be omitted.
