The actual design for the Product Design class will be a bit different, and since this is my first attempt making a foam model, it's pretty crappy as you can see from the paint job. However as I will be making one for the Product Design class, I will take a totally different approach, to achieve a better finish quality and create more surprises.
This final project for Product Design class was based on the topic of lighting-device, with reference to certain material processes chosen. For me, I wanted it to perform as a part of the user, thus choose to have it as a part of the clothing. The processes that would involve in the mass production manufacturing will be extrusion, stamping, plating, cut and sew and so on....
This device is specially designed for workshop users, whether is it working in the garage on cars or in a dark or dim environment. With such compact portable device that doesn't need another hand to hold, the user will benefit from the convenience provided.
The making of this prototype( yes, it works just like the way I want it to
be!) was a
dramatic" one, as I had to walk into female dominated fabric shops and
pretend to know my stuffs.... Well, they are all helpful, especially when I
went to this high class shop where all the free rich housewives are. Sewing
leather isn't hard or easy. It takes a lot of patience... all things do.
The lighting device itself has 2 parts, the larger primary part and smaller secondary part. The larger part goes onto the arm, for a brighter lighting whereas the smaller one goes onto the top of the hand, for smaller and tight spaces. Both can be easily detached with velcro. The vacuum forming of the small parts was a pain, took me 5 straight hours just to produce 4 parts. The secondary lighting makes use of a simple yet clever( praising myself) mechanism.... it's hard to explain and I should have drawn a diagram. Anyway, it was able to create a close circuit with no extra parts, with the help of the snap on cover( home-made again:)).
My objective for this prototype was to use actual materials that I will use in the final design, and not simulate anything, thus details like sporting porous fabric and different leather were used for their own purposes, as I want to feel comfortable when putting it on.
Well, the presentation went smoothly, and here are the details and photos of the presentation and the model itself! Hope you will like them!
