Joan Yakkey's teaching methods
The web sites created and linked from this page contain illustrations of some teaching ideas and materials developed through the years by prof. Joan Yakkey in the course of her teaching children in Florence ,Italy. The materials presented are used by all the children enrolled in the solfeggio and chorus clsses at the Music Conservatory of Florence and the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, where prof. Yakkey teaches for over 25 years.
The children often sing in Choral choral competitions and opera performances throughout Europe and have recently recorded "La Boheme" and "Tosca" with Mehta conducting and tenor Andrea Bocelli. Prof. Yakkey hopes that other music teachers will be interested in her methods and materials and will contact her at her email address. The Photoalbums with examples illustrate:
Five albums of the series THE SIGN AND THE SOUND
16 booklets of the series THE LANGUAGE OF MUSIC (a contemporary solfeggio method)
JOAN'S MAGIC MUSIC CARDS.
Traditional Christmas Carols for SSA.
New arrangements in the contemporary idiom of early Christmas melodies for SSA.
Italian folksongs for children in small booklets.
Original music for children's and youth choirs.
Materials can be requested by writing to Joan: [email protected]
When Joan first started teaching in Italy in the 1970's, there were no materials accessible or compatible with her ideas for teaching young children, this is when everything started, Joan's first choral students worked together with her and her young daughter in the church basement of San Fillipo Neri. Materials were makeshift but the children were very interested and began learning the beauty of understanding the world of music.

Some of Joan's students in the gardens of Florence, singing an outdoor concert.
