The Portuguese Wildcat: Continued:

Half the battle, was just -
"Making the Weight"!

What exactly was the controversy..?

Did Joe have to add or take off pounds..?

No wonder the "Boxing Record Websites" don't
have all Joe's fights listed. So far I've updated his
total from 92 to 139. The Newspaper columnists
don't spell his name right and then say he's Mexican
or Italian, instead of Portuguese.

It's hard to figure out from this article what exactly
the "Controversy" was. He "weighed but 148 pounds"?
and the fight scheduled was for "148 pounds" ?
I think it was a "typo"  and should've been "147 pounds"

Joe was listed as a Welterweight, which is 147 lb..
Though he did fight mostly Middleweights and
all the way up to Heavyweights.

His own manager doesnt know he's Portuguese ?

I don't think this Winsor guy (Joe's Managers), had Joe's
best interests in mind. In fact, if you look at the fighters
they put Cardoza up against and when, they were down-
right desperadoes and terrible "Handlers". There's an Art
to how you bring up a young fighter, building his con-
fidence along the way  and making sure he's good
and ready for each well matched opponent. The only
thing wrong with that formulae?: Joe was trying to make
a living and raise a family during some of the toughest
economical times the U.S. of A.  had ever seen.

The "Boxing Record Websites" have "Benny Ford" listed as Joe's Manager but I also know that "Wirt Ross" and "Windy Winsor" were involved for awhile too. His Wife Delia finally took over, as his "Handlers" take of the purse got a little out of  balance.
