Wednesday, July 4 - The Fourth of July Will Now Be Observed on July Fifth
Happy Independence Day

Wednesday was a relatively restful day (much needed) as we didn't venture away from our hotel until after noon. It turned out to be a good day to not do much outside as it was so windy that fireworks for this evening have been postponed until tomorrow. When we did venture out, we went to Assateague Island National Seashore to see the beach and wildlife. We know that the feral horses are the main attraction here, but Jim told me that he only saw one horse when he was here. Of course, we saw several yesterday, and it didn't take long to see one today:
Horse Crossing

Now this isn't the way we saw this horse at first, I put this picture up higher because I didn't want anyone to think I was posting something grotesque, like what this might appear to be:
Horse Playing

When we got to this point, the horse on the left appeared to be writhing on the ground as its legs were flailing. We thought it might have been hit by a car, but as you can see by the top-most picture, it got back to its feet and walked away, so it was apparently just playing in the grass. Very kind of it to play near the road where we could see, eh?

At the end of the road, we stalked and claimed one of the 9 parking spaces (I never thought about the possibility of there being more people here due to the holiday) and walked one of the sand dune trails. It was mostly uninteresting, but we did encounter one four-legged critter:
Foxy Lady

Now I can't say for sure, but based on what I've read on the National Park website, I think it is a red fox. It didn't look too red, but it was missing a lot of its hair. I don't know if they lose their hair in the warmer months, but that is the best guess I could make as to what it was.

After this little encounter and lots on encounters with unfriendly bugs, we headed for other areas of the park so we could finally visit the beach and the ocean. And while the beach was packed, we noticed that a lot of people didn't seem to be staying very long. Once we started walking on the beach, we realized why:
I Surrender!

The wind was blowing so hard that we could feel the sand hitting our legs and it was not a pleasant experience. I walked a little bit down the beach to take pictures and we each took a turn going to the water, but we didn't stay long and we headed back to Ocean City for the day.

We did attempt some shopping before claiming a parking space at our hotel/movie theater before spending the rest of our evening on foot (driving on the road, singular, is a tad scary). We walked to dinner at Croc's again and then to Dumser's Dairyland for ice cream (for me at least; Brooke tried to stay healthy). We then finally made our first visit to the ocean in Ocean City:
Still windy

Tomorrow should be a very full day as we have a kayak tour, a return to Assateague Island to look for more horses, and some souvenir shopping to do. It is also our last non-traveling day on this trip, so it may be appropriate that there will be fireworks tomorrow night to celebrate the finale of our vacation! Oh, and that "birth of our country" thing, too.
