Mid-Atlantic Vacation Blog
The blog is back! And I don't want to raise expectations too high, but I've acquired some more camera equipment since my last blog, so combine that with a variety of destinations and who knows what pictures and stories could result. You never know when you're going to encounter and eight-foot-tall Chuck Woolery bobble-head doll (again), but if I do, I'll be able to get dozens of different shots of it. Of course, the "big trip" is our driving vacation to New River Gorge, Richmond, Williamsburg, and Assateague Island, but the vacation really started at 4:45 p.m. on Friday (45 minutes late thanks to T*#%!beam) we Brooke and I and the Fox family went to Clifty Falls State Park for a weekend of camping. Now I would have blogged while we were there, and even though camping gets more and more modern all the time, I thought that asking for internet access was a bit much. We didn't arrive until just about sunset on Friday, so the evening was spent pretty much assembling the tent and setting up the camper. On Saturday, we had fairly nice weather so we ventured toward the actual "Clifty Falls". While the stairs that led all the way down to the bottom were closed, there were still plenty of stairs to experience. However, none of them went very close to the falls themselves, and this was the best picture I could get: ![]() We all walked a little further, but it got a little too adventurous for the kids, so they went to the playground while I got us a little lost, but eventually back. We then headed back to the campsite for lunch and a rest. Well, everyone rested but me; I decided to venture out on my own and actually walked up the bed of Clifty Creek as far as I could: ![]() While it was adventurous for me, I was gone for almost three hours and that was longer than expected and the rest of our party came looking for me. As soon as I regained cell service, I was able to let everyone know I was OK (well, I'm not sure that Gabbi and Sterling were that concerned because Gabe said that they were more worried about who got to hold the map than they were about finding me). After that, we had a reasonably relaxing evening with a campfire-cooked dinner: ![]() Sunday turned out to be a washout as it rained most of the morning and we decided to head out early. We also decided that we had enough exercise and healthy eating and tried the best we could to undo it by going to Dairy Queen (Caramel Waffle Crisp Blizzard - B+, but demerits for not having hamburgers or french fries) and McDonald's. Then we pretty much went straight home and reacquainted ourselves with the great indoors. So you're thinking that we just spent Monday resting and getting ready for the "big trip"? NO! That would have been smart, though. I spent the morning playing golf with my dad at Pleasant Run Golf Course: ![]() I played my typical round: mostly bad with enough good to make me want to go again. (Just for the record, in the picture above, my dad completely duffed his tee shot and it barely bounced over the creek, but he still made par (5) for the hole. I got on the green in three shots and ended up with a 6. It was that kind of day.) Anyway, after that, we did start getting ready for our journey to West Virginia tomorrow. Brooke traveled the city trying to find someone who would tell her what was wrong with my car (it makes funny noises when turning), but three different places told her it was probably not a problem, so we had to settle for tire rotation and oil change. I spent the afternoon taking care of our yard and pool and garden to make sure that they don't take over the neighborhood while we're gone. I don't know when we're leaving tomorrow, but we only have a 7-hour drive planned, so I don't know if there will be anything to tell in tomorrow's edition of the blog, but I'll definitely post that we've made it OK at a minimum!
