(American) Black Tern Chilodnias niger surinamensis
Farmoor Res., Oxon, Aug. 2009.

3rd for Britain of this current subspecies. On one visit this juvenile was flying around with a juvenile "Eurasian" Black Tern (C. n. niger) and a juvenile White-winged Black Tern. This allowed for excellent comparison. Comparison with the Eurasian Black Tern subspecies revealed the American form to have a dark grey flank line, bigger neck-side mark, slight dusky underwings and darker upperparts.
