History of Service: 1933 Completed. 1934 ~ 1936 Re-fitted at Yokosuka, attempt to overcome the stability problems. The hull was strengthened and the bulges were widden. November 1940 Became the flagship of CarDiv 3. April 1941 Became flagship of CarDiv 4, 1st Air Fleet. December 1941 Philippines Operation, launched strike against Davao, and assisted the invasion of Legaspi. Feburary 1942 Operation "L" ~ participated in the Palembang occupation. Attacked enemy shippings at Palembang, including Rear Admiral Doorman striking force. March 1942 Operation "J" ~ intercept enemy warships fleeing from the Battle of Java Sea. Sank the destroyer USS Pope. Operation "D" and "U" ~ Striked against Andamans and Burma. 3 ~ 5 June 1942 Launched attack at Dutch Harbour with JUNYO. July 1942 Assigned to CarDiv 2, 3rd Fleet. 16 ~ 24 August 1942 Operation "GA" ~ Guadalcanal. Battle of the Eastern Soloman. Two strikes were launched to attack Henderson Field. She was hit by dive bombers and topedo bombers from the USS Saratoga. The ship lost speed and began to list. Eventually she capsized to starboard and sank. November 1942 Scapped from the Navy List. |
