History of Service: June 1941 The JUNYO and HIYO were the liners from Nippon Yusen Kaisha. They were rebuilt into aircraft carriers and completed in mid 1942. May 1942 Commissioned as CarDiv 4, 1st Air Fleet. 3 June 1942 Launched strikes against Dutch Harbour with RYUJO and covered the invasion of Attu and Kiska. October 1942 Assigned to CarDiv 2, 3rd Fleet. Participated in the Battle of Santa Cruz. Bombed during the engagment but incurred no damaged. November 1942 Covered a convoy to Guadalcanal with KONGO, HARUNA and TONE. December 1942 Covered the reinforcement operation in New Guinea with AGANO. January 1943 Again covered the convoy to New Guinea. Operation "KE" ~ covered the evacuation of Guadalcanal. April 1943 Slightly damaged by air raid in Turk August 1943 Ferried aircrafts to Singapore. September 1943 Ferried troops and equipments to Carolines. November 1943 Hit by one torpedo from the submarine USS Halibut in Bungo Suide. 16 ~ 20 May 1944 Operation "A - GO" ~ the Battle of Marianas. Hit by two bombs on the deck during the second day of battle, air operations were terminated. July 1944 Assigned to CarDiv 4, 3rd Fleet. October 1944 Transport duties for Philippines. November 1944 Attacked by submarine USS Pintado. But the torpedoes hit destroyer AKIKAZE. Attacked by submarine USS Jallao on the 13th but no damage. Attacked by submarine USS Barb on the 15th with no damage. Assigned to CarDiv 1. December 1944 Ferried survivors from battleship MUSASHI. 8 ~ 9 December 1944 JUNYO hit by 3 torpedoes during the attack by submarines USS Sea Devil, Plaice and Red Fish. But she managed to escape and repaired at Sasebo. January 1945 Attacked by bombers in drydock. March 1945 Repair stopped because of materials shortage. April 1945 Camouflaged and crew training. August 1945 All arment were removed to shore for defence purposes. 2 September 1945 Surrendered to the Allies when Japan surrendered. October 1945 Inspected by American Naval Technical Staff, and the ship was later on scrapped. |
