There have been many different stories, shows, and movies come out for the purpose of entertainment that may have Sherlock Holmes in it or just have the main charecter look sort of like Holmes, and the name might even sound close, but there were many, stories especially, that tried to bring the beloved detective back and have failed. There seems to be only one man that was really capable of actually writting a story with Holmes just as he was. Small wonder, since Sir Conan Doyle created Holmes to begin with. But, here we have a few of the examples that I was talking about: "The Great Mouse Detective," a film by Disney that portrayed Holmes and Watson and the rest of the charecters as mice and the plot line was a little like a few different Holmes mysteries together. The mouse that is supposed to be Holmes is actually named after the famous actor that played the detective: Basil Rathbone. Watson's name is changed to Dawson. It is rather amusing if you actually think about it. Another that I have heard of and have also actually seen is the series that was shown on Fox until they stopped showing it. "Shirly Holmes" was about a 15-year-old girl that was supposedly some girl who found a chest in her attict that no one was able to open and she was able to figure it out to find that it belonged to Holmes and she found a letter in it that said that "my work has consumed my life and I have produced no heir to follow in my path, but I picture you; a young man of good imagination . . ." It goes on to say that "any mystery devised by mortal minds can be solved . . ." The actress the plays this part is Meredith Henderson (see photo).
Another one of my favorites is the cartoon series that was also on the FOX netwrok: "Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century." The story of Inspector Beth Lestrade who brings Sherlock Holmes back to life to defeat Professor James Moriarty who was also brought back to life. Sherlock Holmes is rejuvinated into the body of a 20-year-old's. Dr. John Watson started out as just another compudroid that belonged to Lestrade. Then, they tell "Watson" to read...er...scan some old books that turn out to be the real Watson's old journals and then the droid "downloads" the personality of the real Watson. It is rather an entertaining cartoon for kids between the ages of 6 to 11. Every episode is based on one of the original classics. I have over six hour's worth of episodes that are each 22 minutes long after the commercials have been cut out.
Now this is intersting. I was at the library the other day and was looking for a computer programming book and found a book called Elementary BASIC: Learning to Program Your Computer in BASIC With Sherlock Holmes, by Henry Ledgard & Andrew Singer. So far, it is rather interesting. They say in it that "The 'Analytical Engine,' the direct forebear of today's computers, came into use at just about the time that Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the first Sherlock Holmes story..." It is written through the eyes of Dr. Watson as another set of stories and Holmes tries to explain to Watson how to programme this "analytical engine." I find it a great tool if you are interested in learning how to prorgamme your computer. And that is where I close off. Hope you enjoyed it. I know I did. Well, come back another time, will you? Well, hope to see you next time. Good bye and farewell until then.
