The Role of The Technology Coordinator or Computer Teacher
You might have only signed up for one job, but you will have several hats to wear. These are the major roles you might expect to play at your school with resources to help you out.
Technology Integration Specialist / Classroom Teacher
Gone are the days when you could use computer time for typing practice and remedial help. Technology is changing and evolving, and there so many different activities that can be done with a computer. Over the past 10 years, we have seen the evolution of the Internet and World Wide Web, CD-ROM's, DVD's, the Pentium chip, etc. If students don't gather the technological skills now, they will most certainly be left behind in the future. So your job is an important one!
The biggest mistake one could make is to assume computer time is extra-curricular or an add-on! Computer or Technology usage should be incorporated into all subjects. Your guiding document will be the Minimum Competencies for Curriculum-Related Technology. These are our learning outcomes for computer usage. This document will be up for revision in the coming year. An assessment tool has been developed to accompany this document.
Your biggest and most important job is making sure technology is integrated into every subject area. As the Technology Coordinator, you will find that some regular classroom teachers will seek you out for computer resources when planning a unit. However, some teachers will just send their children to the lab and go enjoy free time. Sometimes you have to find out what units they are planning and present resources to them. Start a collaborative effort - have students work on the technology component of a project in your lab and the other components with their regular classroom teacher.

Technology Planner
Another role you might play is one of the Technology Planner. Every school must have an approved Technology Plan on file with the Office of Catholic Education. You also need an approved Technology Plan for E-Rate funding. You might have to set up a Technology Committee to design the plan and implement it. Other considerations are funding, internet safety, and the acceptable use policy.

Staff Computer Trainer
Your role might also extend to training your fellow staff members on computer usage and software programs. Your teachers will never use the computer with their students if they don't know how to use it themselves. You might try offering sessions after school or during specials. The Office of Catholic Education offers several technology based workshops each school year for you and your teachers to attend. Other opportunities are available as well.
