All About Me

Well, who doesn't like to talk a bit about himself?  Or herself, as the case may be.  So if you're interested, here's a bit of a rambling list.

I am at the moment  (March 1st, 2006)  a junior in college studying Japanese.  I minored in computer science.   Thank goodness that's done.  Why Japanese?  I don't know.  Everybody asks me that.  I just like it.  Why not?

I am a Christian, meaning I've dedicated myself to following Jesus Christ.  I like authors such as C.S.  Lewis, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Don Miller when it comes to non-fiction, and in the fictional realm, I'm on an everlasting search for good fantasy/sci-fi/allegory.  So far the Firebird Trilogy by...  ack, I can't remember her name, Kathy Tyers?....  Well I'll look it up later and let you know.   Anyway, the Firebird Triloy and Arena by...  um...  yeah.  Anyway, those are the two best I've read so far  (meaning, my favorites).  If you've any suggestions I'd love an email.  Oh, I DO like the Chronnicles of Narnia.  And his space trilogy will require another reading before I can decide my opinion of it.  I love Tolkien's Silmarillion as well, and the Lord of the Rings isn't bad either.  (Although it's nothing to the Silmarillion.)

My current favorite anime is Rurouni Kenshin, manga more than anime  (as is often the case with me)  especially more than the whole end of the anime, after the Shishio arc ends, as I watched about 3 and couldn't go further.  My favorite character would have to be Soujirou, although I can't really think of any main, recurring character that I don't like.  Well, okay, I thought about it, and I guess I don't care much for a handful of the Juppongatana.  I also love the soundtracks.  Haven't yet seen the OAVs, but I hope to soon and hope they do a good job with Enishi and Tomoe.

Well, as you might have gathered from the proceeding, my musical tastes do tend to lean to anime;  throw in video games  (especially final fantasy), movies  (especially lord of the rings), Blind Guardian's Nightfall in Middle Earth, Jars of Clay, Nicole Nordeman, Eisley, and Micheal Card, and you have my rather eclectic and un-classifiable musical preference.  I can't explain it with a single word like  "pop"   or  "country", but must instead dive into a list of names and songs that most people have never heard of.  Woe is me.

I like winter best, as it's the season for drinking hot chocolate, wearing warm clothes, reading, and crocheting.  I like gray skies and the contrast of that with the beautiful colors of the evergreens in Oregon and the mountains is a favorite nature scene of mine.  Summer is too hot and too bright  (my poor eyes can't take the sun!  Some people claim sunglasses can rectify that, but they are of marginal use at best.  Although if I didn't have them, I probably couldn't drive in summer for squinting.).

I did like playing video games rather often in high school, and even though I still like them now, I play very rarely, and usually only a very few favorites, such as final fantasy vii, viii, or x, harvest moon, kingdom hearts, or pokemon.  Yes I DO like the pokemon video games for the gameboy's various forms.

I like crocheting, especially afghans.  As certain friends and I also like watching tv series on DVD, such as Survivor, LOST, Gilmore Girls, Dr. Quinn, or The Pretender, I find it wonderful that I can crochet at the same time  (otherwise I don't think I'd be able to let myself watch so much tv).

My favorite food is bread.  A favorite hobby is baking bread.  It has to be the most delicious thing in the world.  I also like venison steaks with mashed potatoes and gravy, but my dad's the only one who can do them justice.  Some others:  a friend's spring rolls, hummus in pita bread, nikuman, yakisoba, peanut butter m&m's and reeses peanut butter cups, korokke, meatloaf, egg salad sandwiches  (with miracle whip, not mayonnaise).  I usually drink water but on some occasions I'll take root beer if it's available, any brand is fine, or juice.

As for books that aren't necessarily of a Christian slant or influence, I like Orson Scott Card's Ender series, the one branching to Speaker for the Dead more than the one branching off to all of the Shadow books, except for Ender's Shadow, which I like on par with the first set.  Hmm...   I like everything by Jane Austen.   I like the original Jungle Book stories.  Timothy Zahn's Conqueror series is good.  Once upon a time I owned most of the Star Wars novels out there, although they've all but a very few gone to a used book store  (I think I kept Zahn's Thrawn trilogy, although as I'm not at home staring at my bookshelf, I don't remember).  I like a few of the Deep Space Nine books, especially the Millenium  (I think that's what it's called)  trilogy and the book Stitch in Time  (as Garak was always one of my favorite characters).

Which leads into tv shows.  As already mentioned, I'll watch Survivor, Dr. Quinn, Pretender, LOST, and Gilmore Girls.  Tack on occasionally Amazing Race, Stargate SG-1, Star Trek Voyager, Star Trek Enterprise, and...  I think that's about it.  Oh, Star Trek Deep Space Nine, of course.  It's one of my old favorites.  As for movies, it just depends.  Anime also just depends.  As I mentioned, I currently like Rurouni Kenshin.  I liked Cowboy Bebop, too.  Oh, and Spirited Away.   Love the soundtrack for that one, too.
