| I have had the good fortune to work with students from diverse backgrounds and cultures. These experiences have broadened my view of the world and enriched my life as I hope to have enriched theirs. I have taught in rural Vermont, Southern California and India. I have learned in each of these contexts. Some of my teaching practices around cultural diversity include: * Increasing my "cultural competency" by learning as much as I can about my students' culture * Being very aware of the language that I use in the classroom * Learning about the students' family structure and life * Making connections between academic content and various cultures * Encouraging various cultures to enter the classroom through celebrations * Reflecting on my teaching with a focus on cultural interactions |

Left: I engage students from Los Angeles County in an icebreaker game to allow us to begin to get to know each other. Laughter is a great way to begin! Below: Sharing stories and discussing them provides a great way to have cultural interactions. |
