| Considered one of Van Gogh's first great art works. After painting and drawing over 40 practice works during the 1884-85 winter, mainly of peasants and their daily life, a competently good painting resulted, capturing the humanity of the subjects. Personally, I think it sucks, as did some critics at the time. The subjects look comic and contrived, as if Vince glued together a collage of his practice works, recalling memorized shapes. Too much black, not enough light. But a great result with only 5 years practice. |
