| Kinesiology Notes: (since 1/23/03) Definitions -Kinesiology : is the study of movement. Which utilizes principles of mechanics, musculoskeletal anatomy, and neuromuscular physiology Anatomical and Fundamental positions: (see medical illustrations for pics) Types of Motion -Linear motion : also called translatory motion, occurs in more or less a straight line from one location to another. -Rectilinear motion : moving in a straight line. -Curvilinear motion: curved path Joint Movements (Osteokinematics) (see medical illustration for pics) Types of Joints -Fibrous joint (have no movement--sutures in the skull) * Synarthrosis - suture joint * syndesmosis - ligamentous joint * Gomphosis - joint found between tooth and the wall of the dental socket -Cartilaginous Joints (contains either hyaline or fibrocartilage between two bones) *also called amphiarthrodial joints (they allow small movements) *these joints provide great deal of stability -Diarthrosis *or synovial joints are free moving (hip, knees, elbows) *non-axial - gliding joints (intercarpals) *uniaxial - flexion/extension (elbow) *biaxial - flex/ext. and abduct and adduction (wrist) *triaxial (multi-axial) - all of the above and rotation (shoulder and hip) Planes and Axes of Motion (see medical illustration for pics) Muscle Coverage |
