Jeff's Jurassic Park Bike

For running errands around the park.

The Inspiration.

Ford Explorer, Green on Yellow with Red safari Trim.(The coolest vehicle ever!).
Early concept drawing

Using so-fisticated technology, Jurassic Park scientists aided by super computers - thinkin' machines and virtual 2D reality displays created this highly advanced concept drawing :-).

Before & After

An old Huffy 10 speed. This bike is about 3 years old and was in dire need of attention. Since I bought my girlfriend a new bike for Christmas, I decided to try and paint this one like the Ford Explorer in the movie:-)

STEP 1

Disassemble and clean everything.

Thanks to at least one yearly lube job, came apart rather easily. Used razorblade scraper to remove old stickers and sanded with fine grade sandpaper.

Chrome and aluminum was cleaned and polished with steel wool.

Sand and Tape

Prepped the frame and taped off all chrome and negative areas. I didn't want the bike to look too over done so I tried to salvage as much of the original trim as possible.

* Decals pictured in foreground.

Stickers were made with Photoshop using the Jurassic Park font, pasted into a Word file and printed on stock full sheet mailing labels.

One logo for each side, one on the neck, derailleur, chain guard, mirror, and at least one or two extra logos for back ups.

Primer and paint

Used white primer to make sure colors came out as light as possible.

Applied layer of green first then blended up with yellow.

Painted red safari stripes last, using a stencil drawn on blue painter's tape and cut out with an exacto knife.

Re-Assembly:

Put the parts back on.

Strung new cables, 5 speed friction shift, mirror and grips.

Some elements from the movie were incorporated into the design:-)

This project took about 3 days. The majority of the time was spent disassembling and cleaning the be-jesus out of everything. Paint was done the third afternoon using regular Home Depot spray paint and a lot of "light" coats. I thought my finger was going to fall off.

Had also considered mounting a side arm (nerf dart gun) in a holster on the right side of the neck "the Lindstradt pistol!" and a GPS Dino tracking device on the handle bars. K-Mart had all these cheap little electronic toys with LCD screens and buttons on them which could easily be mocked up to look like some kind of InGen gadget. We were also thinking about saddle bags, a radio, giant net? :-)

Since this is bike is really just for show, it probably wont be ridden around too much and will probably wind up being donated to the local bike auction or given away. I'll ride it at least once on Duval street in full JP garb just to see if anyone notices, or calls the loonie bin to see if a "Dinosaur Ranger" is reported missing :-)

Thanks for visiting my JP bike page.
