  FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How popular is water polo?
In the St. Louis area, there are 21 high school teams, three college teams, four middle school clubs, five high school clubs, one women's club, and one men's club.  More information can be found at the Missouri Water Polo website.

I've never played before.  Is that a problem?

Not at all!  Most high school players in the area did not play before they entered high school.  So if you are in 7th or 8th grade and you choose to start playing now, you will be ahead of the average player in terms of experience.

How good of a swimmer do I have to be?
Water polo is tiring, but if you have been on a swim team before, you will be fine.  If your swimming background is limited to lessons, you might struggle at first, but you can improve!

Do I have to wear a Speedo?
No, you don't have to; trunks are fine for beginners.

When is the high school water polo season?
Since the 2006-2007 school year, water polo has been a spring sport, along with baseball, golf, lacrosse, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

What if I'm not convinced that I want to play water polo?
Come try it!  If you decide that you do not want to play, your money will be refunded, except the money sent to U.S.A. Water Polo.

I'm going to attend SLUH next year.  Do I have to start playing now?

No.  But the more experience you have, the better your chances will be of making SLUH's team.

If I play club water polo, will I make SLUH's team?

Not necessarily.  Several boys in the past few years played club water polo but were not selected for SLUH's team.
