Dark Side of the Rainbow
How it All Started
This is the penultimate Synchronization, the pinnacle of underground Pop Art. It is one of the easiest and definitely the best Synch out there. Here's the digs:

Materials Needed

1 copy of The Wizard of Oz
1 copy of Pink Floyd's "Dark SIde of the Moon"

Necessary Steps

1. Play and immediately pause Dark Side of the Moon at the very beginning of the album. Do not let any time pass on the first track.

2. Play The Wizard of Oz.

3. At the MGM Lion, wait through the first two roars and hit play on your CD player immediately at the third roar.

This might take you more than one try. You will know it is successful if the music on "Breathe" changes at the "Produced by" credit.

Discussion

When analyzing Dark Side of the Rainbow, it is important to note that the only thing that keeps this Synch above all others is that it matches up frame by frame, movement by movement. This is very unlike all other Synchs, which are more Synchronized by feeling and action than in the technical act of cutting from one scene to another. However, there is none better than this at introducing what Synchronization is capable of; unfortunately, it will never be matched.

What occurs during the Synch is by far extraordinary. The matching is so precise that the feeling of intent permeates throughout all 45 minutes of it. Perhaps that is why the Synch is so perfect. It could also be some sort of Cosmic message, or just two pieces of perfect art touching each other from across time.

What Happens After?

There is some debate over what to do when the album ends. Most people believe you can start the album over immediately and continue the movie. Having attempted this, I can definitely say it is a Synchronization, but it is a Strict Synch and not a Pop Synch. The immensity of cues that line up during the first play through do not compare to the second at all. Only a handful, if that, of sound effects and songs cue up at startling times. However, the themes of the album still resonate and it is just like watching a deliberately created Strict Synch. It might bore those who only desire Pop Synchs or really good Strict Synchs, so be aware of your audience. You can also play the album a third time by repeating it again after the second. However, you'll probably have enough inconsistency with repeats that it will no longer line up at all, but merely be an enjoyable mood enhancer.

Beware

There is one thing to be wary of: the new copies of Wizard of Oz include a few extra seconds that throw the Synch off when Dorothy travels through her front door into the world of Technicolor. Any copy made after the mid 80s should not be trusted, and you can tell if your copy has these extra seconds by determining if the black and white portion of the film is in fact black and white, or sepia (brown and white). I am not aware if the Special Edition DVD has fixed this. The best way to cure it is to attempt to line up the Ca-Ching at the beginning of "Money" with the door opening. Since the door opens slowly, this can be difficult, but pick a spot and do it. The rest of the Synch should be enjoyable at least in mood.
