Watercolour Art of JPA Gittens - 3
The Chattel House Series
A dominant theme/subject is the chattel house. This typical gingerbread timber house was perfected by artisans in the early 20th century. It was designed for easy setup, dismantling and transporting from one spot to another, indicative of the tenuous nature of landholding by Barbados black working class in the colonial era. The chattel house, though fast disappearing as concrete (and less attractive) bungalows mushroom, has become emblematic of Barbados. Features of the chattel house nevertheless have been absorbed into Barbadian architecture generally, and this continues to be the case. The chattel house is favourite of contemporary artists and photographers.
