Five ways to help Labour win

A campaign led by Julie Morgan MP has resulted in a reprieve for the Wales Specialist Support Service, it has been announced.

The Service, which provides advice on matters ranging from human rights to debt to immigration and more, had the threat of termination hanging over it after the Legal Services Commission, which funds it, decided to withdraw funding from October this year.

That decision has now been reversed, and options for the Service's future have been put out to consultation.

Julie claimed a short-term victory, but emphasised that more work needed to be done to secure the Service's future when the issue of its continuation resurfaces later this year.
Julie has led the campaign to stop the funding cuts levelled at the WSSS
Julie said: "This change of mind has been achieved via a massive amount of pressure from MPs and agencies in the field. Early Day Motion 1542 in my name has been signed by over 160 MPs from all parties.

"The Constitutional Affairs Committee, of which I am a member, produced a report drawing attention to the flawed consultation period and the high esteem in which the Service is held. I held an Adjournment debate in the House of Commons on the Legal Services Commission's work in Wales, as well as asking Parliamentary Questions of the Department of Constitutional Affairs and the Leader of the House.

"People in Wales will now be able to continue to receive the high standard of advice provided by the Service. But we must continue to work to make sure that the funding is in place for the long-term, so that this invaluable service for some of the most vulnerable people in England and Wales can go on."
