Five ways to help Labour win
Back to News headlines
The Labour Team in Cardiff North united with parents, teachers and pupils to oppose the Liberal Democrat Council's plans to close community schools in the constituency.

As part of their plan to tackle surplus places in education in the city, the Lib Dems proposed to close schools across Cardiff, including Cefn Onn Primary and Eglwys Wen. Whitchurch High's lower school was set to close and be replaced with a Roman Catholic school.

Julie, Sue Essex AM and local councillors opposed the plans.
Parents across Cardiff were up in arms about the Council's reorganisation plans
Julie said: "These plans were ill thought out and unacceptable.

"We accept that there is a problem with surplus education places - not just in Cardiff, but across Wales - but the issue must be dealt with in a manner which is sustainable. Parents must be adequately consulted; and successful schools which are at the heart of their communities must not close.

"I campaigned to save Eglwys Wen, Cefn Onn and Whitchurch High Lower School. Very many parents signed up to the campaign and told the Council to go back and think again."

Julie, Sue and Sophie held a packed-out public meeting at Whitchurch High School on 12 April, where parents expressed their opposition to the plans for the area.

Local councillor Sophie Howe said: "The level of opposition to the Lib Dems' proposals was huge across the constituency and indeed across the whole of Cardiff. Parents in Whitchurch banded together and organised petitions and campaign posters. They were up in arms at the plans and were pleased to see them withdrawn.

"Residents across Cardiff wanted the Council to go back to the drawing board. They were right to do so."
