Five ways to help Labour win

Residents and traders in Heath and Whitchurch are gearing up to oppose a Tesco Express planned for Birchgrove Road.

The proposal for the store, which would be based on the old Majestic wines site, has aroused the ire of local people, who fear for the future of small shops and businesses in the area.

Julie Morgan MP, Sue Essex AM and Councillor Sophie Howe held a public meeting on Wednesday 31 May, attended by 120 worried local people.
Tesco is failing to win friends and influence people with its proposed new Express store on Birchgrove Road
Packing the hall at Birchgrove Primary School, residents, whose campaign has already received press coverage in the South Wales Echo and the Cardiff Post, queued up to condemn the plans.

The latest step in locals' plans is a petition asking the Council not to renew the site licence to sell alcohol, which would carry over from Majestic to Tesco.

Julie Morgan MP said: "They say every little helps, but sometimes it seems as if Tesco wants to buy up the whole lot.

"We value our village communities in the north of Cardiff. They are an important focus of the community and they should be supported and preserved.

"The issue of large multi-national supermarkets pushing out local traders and small businesses is a hot topic at Westminster at the moment. I will bring this issue up in the House of Commons and I will be asking Tesco to think again."
