| You are a great dancer , Julia In the film was it all you or did you cheat and get a body double? Thanks ! One of the reason I got the part was because they knew I could do it.... and I told the director he wasn't alllowed to bring a hip hop double onto the set. But it was only my upper body and occassionally my legs in the ballet scenes. I can't go on points, so they doubled the toe shoots. Do you like to throw shapes off- scenes too? Yeah, I love to dance, but I'm much more confortable with hip hop than I am with ballet. That's one reason why I did this movie - because I'm really into hip hop. Are you a Eminem fan? I love Eminem. I'm over the hype around him through. I think he is a really talented rapper , but the controversial stuff he raps about kind of bothers me. It comepletely goes against all my faminist idealls. But Eminem sounds good and he rhymes really well. Oh and he's really cute ! { laughs} Save the last dance is a love story about a white girl and a black guy and the pressure they face . Did that have any impact on you? I know that Sean got greif from his friends about it - "why are you doing a love scene with a white girl?". That kind of thing funnily enough. I was in starbucks the other day and this black woman started askinmg about the film. She said , "Yeah , I heard about you and the brothers". {laughs} So people definetly thik about it, but I don't think interracial relationships are as controversial as they were. Everyone's politically correct, so the white person in the relationship will often have to overcompensale to show that they're not racist, while the black person has prove to the people around them they're not selling out or "dissing" black people. You're a student at Columbia uni. Do people treat you differently cos you're famous? My friends and the people I'm in class with treat me normally. They don't seem to care about my career that much. Like they asked me what do I do when I promote my films, and so I told them I sit in a room and talk about myselfall day. And they were like "You're not that interesting". I act as a normal person , so I command that treatment back. Hower when I first started college people did double take. People were talking about me , but college is like that anyway , whoever you are. The grapevine is very thick. Is it easier to pull? {Laughs} Is it easier to get dates but it's scary because I don't want everyone to pay attention to who I'm datig it's kinda weird. And if they are that concerned with me being an actress, then I don't want to know anyway. Ever been on a date from hell? Oh my God I went out somebody from college. This guy seekmed gay, so I don't think it was a date at all. But he started talking about his past mgirlfriends, and all of of a sudden I came to a realisation that it was, in fact a real date ! I then panicked and freaked out I'm like: "I've gotta go home and write a paper like er, now". So what do you like for in a guy? A sense of humor is really important . I have to feel comfortable with him and he can't take things seriously. And of course he had to be acttractive. I hate it when people say : "The most important thing he has to have is a good personality!" But he has to be cute ! But we just have to be able to have a good timee together and enjoy hanging out. It would help if we had some mutual interest. And I'll fall in love with a guy if I can learn something from him. You worked with Heath Ledger in 10 things..... What's he like? He's definitely not going to be changed by Hollywood. He's such an ecentric person. It was always really fun to be around him, because he was so entertaining . I remember he arrived on the set with his didgeridoo , straight from the Australian outback! I do thik he'll maintain a good sense of self. {Whisper} He's extremly sexy too! We got to know what was it like kissing Freddie Prinze Jr in Down to you? Freddie's kind of a goofball. He's not into pretending to be super - cool which I ike. But at the end of the day , we are actors and we know kissing is all a part of the job. But he's definitely a good kisser. Are you aware of your cool image in the UK? Does that mean I have a chance with prince William? I an aware of the certain extent, but I try not to be because otherwise I'll go crazy it's nice to have people come up to you and tell that they like your work . It has also opened a social things. But I just kinda laugh when you say I seem really coo things in England still, it's not a bad thing. Ha ha ha. I've fooled them This interview came from May 2001 issue of J17 |
