Reggae’s premier roots festival, Rebel Salute, celebrates its eighth renewal on Saturday, January 13, 2001 at the Port Kaiser Sports Club in St. Elizabeth. The show, promoted by Tony Rebel’s Flames Productions company, is often infested by the mores of ital levity; and the fanatic lovers of roots reggae who converge at this event each year frequently become immobilized by the penetrating sounds of some of reggae’s finest sons.
Rebel Salute 2001 will witness the likes of the electrifying Bunny Wailer, who will be making his first appearance on the Rebel Salute stage. People worldwide hunger for even the slightest tingle from a Wailer and Bunny Wailer never disappoints. His slew of hits include ‘Black Heart Man’; ‘Roots Man Skankin’; ‘Ballroom Floor’; ‘Crucial’ and ‘There’s a Land’. Also making their debut performance will be son of reggae’s greatest icon, Ky- Mani Marley, Glen Washington; Avaran from neighbouring Nassau and Israel Vibration, known in reggae circles for casting a harmonious spell by weaving traditional roots reggae with a mesmerizing sound and a deeply spiritual message.
Set to give encore renditions of their righteous raps and rituals are the messenger, Luciano; Everton Blender; Capleton; Anthony B and Joseph Hill, from the group Culture, who gave a devastating last year and effectively stole the show. The future of roots reggae will be ably represented by exciting newcomers, Abijah and poet, JON’ah.
Promoter Tony Rebel says his company Flames Productions is busy putting measures in place to facilitate smooth entrances and exit points, improved ticketing and parking facilities. In anticipation of the usual support, traffic control measures will be strictly enforced to allow for a more orderly operation. The official press launch is scheduled for Thursday, December 28, at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston. Corporate sponsors include Irie- Fm, Caymanas Track, CVM Television, Great Vacations, Jamaica Tourist Board, Air Jamaica; Golf View Hotel; Power 106 and Cooyah Designs.
