*Ceramcoat Acrylic Paints and Matte Varnish by Delta Technical Coatings, Inc., were used for this project. Supplies: Ruler, container with water, paper towels, sandpaper, rag. INSTRUCTIONS: Candlesticks (Note: Thin paint with water to an ink consistency. Let paint dry between color changes. Use #10 shader for basecoating; use other brushes as indicated. Use photo as painting guide.) 1. Basecoat the candlesticks. Small. Basecoat 5 candlestick as follows: center with Dark Forest Green; bottom rim and top with Prussian Blue; neck ring with Barn Red. Medium. Basecoat 6 candlestick as follows: center and bottom of base with Prussian Blue; top of base and neck ring with Barn Red; top and ring at bottom of center with Dark Forest Green. Large. Basecoat 7 candlestick as follows: bottom with Prussian Blue; center with Dark Forest Green; top and top ring with Barn Red; bottom ring with Dark Forest Green. 2.Add the details. (Note: Use liner for painting details.) Small. Paint wavy vertical lines, evenly spaced, down center section with Barn Red. Paint the following with Flesh Tan: a wavy line around bottom rim; a zigzag line around bottom of top section. (Note: For dots, dip handle end of paintbrush into paint; then touch handle to surface. Do not dilute paint.) Centering one dot between each set of wavy lines, paint a row of dots around top and bottom of center section with Flesh Tan. Medium. With Flesh Tan, paint a wavy line around top outside of top section. With Forest Green, randomly paint Xs around center and top of base. In the same way as small candlestick, paint dots around bottom of base with Flesh Tan. Large. With #4 shader and Barn Red, paint vertical lines, 1/2 apart, down top and sides of bottom section. With Prussian Blue, paint a wavy line around top and bottom outside edges of top section. In the same way as the medium candlestick, randomly paint Xs around top section with Forest Green; paint a wavy line around bottom edge of bottom and dots around center section with Flesh Tan. 3. Finishing. Lightly sand edges of candlesticks for a weathered look. Wipe candlesticks with damp paper towel to remove dust. With #10 shader, apply one coat of varnish to each candlestick; let dry. Candles (Note: Use photo as assembly guide.) Use wire cutters to cut wire into three 48 lengths. Divide beads into three groups of 12. Divide charms into three groups of two. To decorate each candle, bend 1/4 at one end of wire; gently push end into top side of candle. Holding thumb over wire in candle, spiral wrap wire around candle while randomly sliding 12 beads and 2 charms onto wire loops as you work. (Note: Wire will look better if spirals are not perfect. Cross the wire occasionally for additional interest and to help hold beads in place.) Bend 1/4 at end of wire and insert into side of candle, 1 from bottom. Adjust placement of beads and charms as desired. This project originally appeared in Crafts n Things magazine.
