Generation One

1. Gottfried (Godfrey)1 STULL was born circa 1735 Hanover, Germany.1,2 Additional evidence indicates he was born in the Palatinate, Germany. (He named his home in Virginia "Palatine Hollow" possibly after his homeland).1,3 According to the 1810 census, he was born between 1765 and 1784 . The census listed both he and his wife as age 26-44, but obiously they were over 45 and the census probably was marked in the wrong column.4 According to the 1820 census, he was born before 1776.5 He married Barbara CARMEN in 1779 in (prob) York County, Pennsylvania. (The exact date of their marriage is unknown and family account conflict concerning the year. Since they were both from Pennsylvania they were probably married in Pennsylvania. A grandson, Elliott MORRIS, states they were married in 1779 or 1780, and since no children were born to the couple until after 1780, it seems likely they were married just before moving to Maryland.).1,6 He died on 25 Dec 1821 in Palatine Hollow, Monongalia County, Virginia (now West Virginia).1,5 He inventory of estate, valued at $231.70 3/4, was settled on 1 Feb 1822 in Morgantown, Monongalia County, Virginia (now West Virginia).7 He is buried on 2 Feb 1822 in Palatine Hollow, Monongalia County, Virginia (now West Virginia).8

One story states that In 1743, at the age of eight, he came to America. He was a sailor and served seven years in the Revolutionary Army.3 Another story states that he was a cousin or nephew of Col John STULL, a prominent person in Maryland before and during the Revolutionary War, and that the two crossed the Atlantic from Holland together.3 On 25 Nov 1771, a Gottfried STOLL, or Godfrey STÖLLhe arrived sign the Oath of Abjuration and Fidelity on his arrival in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, on the ship Crawford. This was the same ship, with the same commander, on which a Johann Wilhelm STOLL arrived on 24 Oct 1769. This Johann Wilhelm may be the "cousin" John mentioned above.1,9 On 11 Aug 1732, a Gottfried STAHL arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Samuel of London. The ship arrived "from Rotterdam but last from Cowes." Since he was probably 16 or older, this Gottfried was probably born in 1716 or before. He was almost certainly not this Gottfried.9 On 6 Sep 1779, he appeared on a New Jersey Muster Roll as Gotfried STOLLE. He enlisted on 1 Sep 1779 as a private in Capt. George Schaffner's Chasseur Company of the Independent Corps commanded by Col. Armand (Pennsylvania). The Armand Corps, also called "Light Dragoons," was part of the Pulaski Legion. When Gen Casimir Pulaski died on 11 Oct 1779 from wounds suffered in battle, Col Armand succeeded him and the Pulaski Legion was redesignated "Armand's Partisan Corps."10 He appears on the List of Taxables, Heidelberg Twp., York Co., PA in 1779 and 1780, as Godfrey STOLL. In 1779 he owned one head of cattle, no horses or land, and owed a tax of 4.0.0. In 1780 he owned one head of cattle and owed a tax of 1.17.6." It was probably about this time that he was married.1,11 Godfrey and Barbara had at least thirteen children. The first eight are established by baptismal records. The rest of the family is taken from census records of Monongalia County, Virginia.12
On 18 Feb 1780, Godfrey STULL of "York County in the State of Pennsylvania" acquired "all that Lott or portion of ground situate in Middletown in Frederick County and State of Maryland aforesaid know and distinguished by Number Ten and containing sixty six feed more or less in breadth and three hundred and thirty feet in length." The lot was purchased from Peter KEEFHAVER or "one thousand and twenty five pounds current money of the state of Maryland."1,13 On 29 Jul 1788, "Gottfried Stole" sold his lot in Middletown to John Nicholas OAR for "eighty pound good and lawful money." The deed stated that "Barbara wife of the aforesaid Godfriet Stull... relinquished her right of Dower as the Law directs."14 On 20 Aug 1788, "Godfrey Stull of Frederick County in the State of Maryland" acquired 100 acres in Bullskin Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He purchased the land from "George Batchelor of Bullskin Township" for "seventy pounds lawful money."14 He was enumerated on the 1790 census Bullskin Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, as Also enumerated in the 1790 Census of Bullskin Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, is Paull STULL. His household is recorded as one male 16 and up, three males under 16, and four females.15 He was enumerated on the 1790 census Bullskin Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, as Godfrey STULL. The census listed his household as one male 16 and up (Godfrey, age 55), two males under 16 (sons, John, 10, and Henry, 3), and four females (Barbara, 32, and daughters, Anna Maria, 9, Elizabeth, 5, and Mary Magdalena, 4).15 Between 1790-1795 they moved to Washington County, Pennsylvania.1 On 12 May 1791, "Godfrey Stoll" sold his 100 acres for 120 pounds to Emmanuel Vantrees, and moved his family to German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.14 Sometime between 1793 and 1795, the family moved west, to Washington County (now Greene County), Pennsylvania.14 In Dec 1795 "Godfrey Stull of the County of Washington and State of Pennsylvania" bought 100 acres in Monongalia County, Virginia. According to family records, the family made the move to Virginia in 1796, settling near the Monongalia River, in what is now West Virginia. Godfrey named his new home "Palatine Hollow," presumably after his his homeland in Germany. It was located in the extreme northern part of Grant Magisterial District, about 6 miles north west of Morgantown and about 20 miles from Fairmont.1,16 He was enumerated on the 1810 census Monongalia County, Virginia (now West Virginia), as Godfrey STILL. He is listed in the 1810 census index.17 He died intestate. His son-in-law, Richard MORRIS, and his widow, Barbara STULL, were named administrators.8

Barbara CARMEN was probably born circa 1758 in (prob) Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. (Based on dates provided by her grandson, Elliott MORRIS, she was born either 1758/1759 or about 1763. A birth date of 1758/59, she would have turned 21 and married Godfrey STULL in 1779/80. A birth date of 1763 and marriage age of 21 would place their marriage in 1784, after their first two children were baptized).6 According to the 1810 census, she was born between 1765 and 1784 . The census listed both her husband and her as age 26-44, but obiously they were over 45 and the census probably was marked in the wrong column.4 According to the 1820 census, she was born before 1776.5 Conflicting evidence indicates she was born circa 1748 in Carlisle, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.18 She married Thomas KNIGHT on 30 Mar 1824 in Monongalia County, Virginia (now West Virginia).1,19 She died in 1844 in Monongalia County, West Virginia.19 She is buried in Palatine Hollow, Monongalia County, Virginia (now West Virginia).20 According to her grandson, Elliott MORRIS, Barbara hired out for domestic service at the age of 16 and married at age 21. In one letter he placed her death at his father's home when he was 6 years old, which would make the date of her death fall somewhere between 1 Apr 1842 and 31 Mar 1843. In another letter he wrote that she died in 1847 at almost 84 years of age.6 A Mary Barbara KARMENIE, daughter of Johannes and Juliana KARMENIE, was born 22 Jul 1766 and baptized at Hill Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Annville Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania.21 A Mary Barbara KARMENIE, daughter of John and Juliana KARMENIE, was born 22 Jul 1766 and baptized at Quitapohila Hill Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lebanon Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania.22 A Maria Barbara CARMANY, daughter of John and Juliana CARMANY, was baptized 1 Nov 1767 at Hill Lutheran Church, Derry Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.23 A Mary Barbara KARMENIE, daughter of John and Juliana KARMENIE, was born 18 Aug 1769 and baptized at Hill Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.20
