South Carolina Notes

The only NORTHCUTT in the 1790 census was Benjn NORTHCUT, who was living in Ninety-six District, Abbeville County. His household was recorded as one male over 16 and seven females.

In 1799, Benjamin NORTHCUTT assisted with the ordination of Jonathan DEWEESE, pastor of the Poplar Spring Church in Greenville, South Carolina. Marriage and Death Notices from Baptist Newspapers of South Carolina 1835-1865

Departed this life on the 8th September, 1849, Elder Jonathan Deweese, in the 82d year of his age...born in Kent County, Pa., on 26 August 1767, from which place his parents emigrated and settled in North Carolina, when Jonathan was 5 years old. Two years after his father died, leaving himself and mother....His parents were Presbyterians...after his sarriage, he removed to Greenville, South Carolina...pastor of Poplar Spring Church in September, 1799, ordained by Rev. John Rowland and Benjamin Northcutt ....(eulogy).

According to "South Carolina Notes" (from Northcutt and Allied Families, by Dolly Northcutt and Amelia Sparkman Castleberry.) the following were living in South Carolina.

On 16 Apr 1785, William NORTHCUTT, of Darlington County, received five pounds sterling for 70 days duty in the militia in 1782 "during the War of the Revolution." He was in Capt Amos Windham's company, Col Abel Kolb's regiment, Marion's brigade.
Stephen and William NORTHCUTT, were granted lands in South Carolina in 1785-86-87. Steven received 271 acres on Hogskin Branch and Chickasaw Creek of Savannah, in Abbeville County.
In 1785 Benjamin NORTHCUTT was listed in the estate settlement (Abbeville County) of Jno. ROBERSON Sr, dec'd, 1785. In 1793, the Turkey Creek congregation considered Bro. Benjamin Northcutt 'ripe for ordination' and in 1794, he was licensed to preach and admitted to the Bethel Association. (Turkey Creek was located in Edgefield County, Ninety-Six District, near the current border with Saluda and Greenwood Counties.) In 1795, Benjamin was again listed in the estate of George WILSON, inn keeper. In Jul 1796, he was ordained at Mountain Creek Church, where he served until 1804. Mountain Creek was located in Pendleton County (now Anderson County), Ninety-Six District. Benjamin was listed in both the 1790 and 1800 censuses in Abbeville County.
On 22 Mar 1832, Benjamin NORTHCUTT, of Abbeville County, wrote a will naming his wife Lettice, "several children" including daughters Syntha, Matilda, Mahala, his son-in-law Andrew TICHEY, Noah COBB, Priscilla POSEY, Lettice PETTY, Polly SMITH, Malinda DONALDSON, dec'd, Jacob DONALDSON, their father.
