1. William1 FOSTER was born (est) circa 1734, son of Alexander FOSTER.1

The four known children of William1 FOSTER and an unknown spouse all born in Muddy Creek, York County, Pennsylvania, were as follows:

5. Thomas2 FOSTER (William1) was born on 12 Nov 1772 Muddy Creek, York County, Pennsylvania.1 Conflicting evidence indicates he was born on 18 Nov 1772 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.3 He married Rachel THOMAS in 1795 in Pennsylvania.1 He died on 28 Nov 1855 at age 83.1 Conflicting evidence indicates he died on 28 Nov 1853.3 He is buried in Antioch Cemetery, Sherman Township (SE of Bethany), Harrison County, Missouri.

He was born in what was then Maryland but is now part of Pennsylvania.4 After the birth of their son, David, they moved to Hamilton County, Ohio, near Cincinnati. Later, they lived in Rush and Franklin Counties, Indiana. They also lived in Illinois, and finally moved to the Grand River Country in northwest Missouri. They came in 13 covered wagons, sometimes called Prairie Schooners, each drawn by two horses, besides a number who rode on horseback. Their group included about 42 people who made the 500 mile trip, settling in Daviess and Harrison Counties. In Missouri, prairie sod was so tough it was difficult to put into cultivation and good water was difficult to find on the prairies. For these reasons the settlements were made near where the timber and prairie joined. Thomas and Rachel had about 80 acres of good white-oak timber and prairie. They cut prairie grass for hay, used wild meats altogether and cultivated Indian corn for bread.5 Thomas and his family moved west about 1838, settling in Daviess County, Missouri. Thomas settled in the norther portion of the county that is now Harrison County and his son, David, settled about three miles east of Coffey.4 Thomas FOSTER was among those who arrived in Harrison County, Missouri, prior to 1850.6

Rachel THOMAS was born on 28 Nov 1774 Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.2,1 She died in 1856 in Bethany, Harrison County, Missouri.2,1 She is buried in Antioch Cemetery, Sherman Township (SE of Bethany), Harrison County, Missouri.2

In 1840, he moved his family to Missouri, settling in Daviess County, in what is now Harrison County, and was one of the first settlers in what is now Bethany Township. (Wanamaker states 1839, but he was listed in the 1840 census in Indiana and must have moved that year.).20,21 He settled near John FOSTER, about three miles southeast of the present site of Bethany. He was a minister in the Christian Church.22 In 1845, Harrison County was created from Daviess County and Thomas FLINT was appointed a justice of the peace for the temporary, North Township. In May 1845, Thomas FLINT resigned his commission as justice of the peace for North Township and was appointed circuit and county clerk, for the newly organized County. In Jul 1845, Thomas FLINT was allowed $72.65 for services as clerk.23 At the time of his death, Thomas was the County Clerk of Harrison County.24,21,25 He died on 3 May 1846 in Harrison County, Missouri, at age 47.10,3,12 Conflicting evidence indicates he died on 5 May 1846.15,26 He is buried in McClary Cemetery, NE of Coffey, Daviess County, Missouri. "Nellie" FOSTER on 6 May 1824 in Hamilton County, Ohio.2,1 He married Jane WOODRUFF on 23 Apr 1878 in Harrison County, Missouri. In 1840, he moved his family to Missouri, settling in northern part of Daviess County that is now Harrison County, and was one of the first settlers in what is now Bethany Township.21 He settled four miles southeast of Bethany, near Antioch Church.25 John FOSTER was among those who arrived in Harrison County, Missouri, prior to 1850.6 John and Ellen lived on a farm in the western part of Sherman Township, Harrison County, Missouri. They donated a tract of land for burial purposes. Some years later, they donated more land with the stipulation that one fourth acre be used for a church site and the remainder to be used for burial purposes. The deed was recorded as Christian Church of Antioch on 11 Oct 1872. John was one of the first Trustees.39 His is listed as head of household on the 14 Jul 1860 census Sugar Creek Township, Harrison County, Missouri, as John FOSTER. The census listed him as age 54, born in Kentucky. Enumerated with him were Eleanor FOSTER, Rachel FOSTER, Lucineth FOSTER, and Anderson FOSTER.35 His is listed as head of household on the 17 Aug 1870 census Bethany Township, Harrison County, Missouri, as John FOSTER. The census listed him as age 65, farmer, owning real estate worth $3,000 and personal property worth $800, born in Kentucky. Enumerated with him were Nellie FOSTER, Andy FOSTER, Luceneth FOSTER, and John FOSTER.36 The 1876 Atlas of Harrison County, Missouri, indicates J. FOSTER owned two pieces of land totaling 96.36 acres in Sherman Township (T63N, R27W). He owned 42 acres in the South West quarter of the South West quarter of Section 19 and 54.36 acres in the North West quarter of the North West quarter of Section 30. A church and cemetery was located on the first piece of land.40 His is listed as head of household on the 14 Jun 1880 census Sherman Township, Harrison County, Missouri, as John FOSTER. The census listed him as age 76, farmer. He was born in Kentucky and both of his parents were born in Pennsylvania. Enumerated with him were Jane FOSTER and Jesse HATHAWAY.37

Eleanor (Elen) M.
