Our Caswells

(and Whites, and Macombers, and Hicks, and...)

This Caswell site and all of my related family research are dedicated to:

Earl Ellsworth Caswell

pictured here with his older brother,

Raymond Lexington Caswell

Born:  October 15, 1911  Providence, Rhode Island

to

Irving Elsworth Caswell and Bessie Agnes Furey

Died:  September 1, 1991 San Luis Obispo, California

Earl Ellsworth Caswell was born October 15, 1911 in Providence, Rhode Island to Irving Elsworth Caswell and Bessie Agnes Furey.  Irving Elsworth, born Ellwyn (sp?)  Elsworth, is said to have descended from both early settlers to New England and its native people, especially the Narragansetts.  Bessie immigrated from Ireland when she was 18.

Earl had fond memories of his father, Irving, who was a toolmaker/jeweler by trade, but also an artist (he drew HUGE civil war battle scenes on just a plain sheet of butcher paper) and a carpenter. He was building a brand new house for his family, but unfortunately the house never got finished.  He died of complications due to surgery on August 26, 1924 at a Boston, MA hospital when Earl was almost 13.  Irving is buried in Attleboro, MA.

He also had fond memories of his great-grandfather, Samuel E. White (Irving's maternal grandfather) and his grandmother, Catherine Melvin Furey (Bessie's mother).  Samuel E. White fought in the Civil War and had many stories to tell.  He also had an extensive Civil War gun collection.  Catherine Melvin Furey smoked a pipe, was fond of her "moo-jine" (possibly "home brew," but alcohol in any case) and had a tremendous sense of humor.

Earl and Bessie moved out to Redondo Beach, California in the thirties (on the Greyhound bus!!!) where relatives had moved earlier).

After working as "The Egg Man" in Redondo Beach, CA, Earl joined the Merchant Marines and got his engineer's license.  Earl stayed with the Merchant Marines throughout World War II (following and refueling the Pacific fleet, but came ashore when post war oil transport consisted of only "coast-hopping" between San Diego and Washington.

Raymond eventually moved out to California as well, where after owning a 35 foot sailboat, The Idler, with his brother Earl, became the manager of "The Tuna Club" on Catalina Island for many, many years.

Earl worked for Standard Oil (now called Chevron) for many years and met his future wife, LaVerne Jones, there. They married in 1947 and had two daughters

Bessie died in 1960 in Long Beach California, and is buried at All Souls Cemetery, in Long Beach, CA.

Raymond married twice and had no children.  Raymond died on December 23, 1974, and is buried at the Catalina Island Cemetary alongside his second wife Estelle, who preceded him in death.

Earl and family moved to San Luis Obispo, CA in June of 1973.  He died on September 1, 1991, and is buried at Lady Family Cemetery in San Luis Obispo, CA.

Our currect (partially) documented Caswell research goes from Earl Ellsworth Caswell back to Elijah Caswell, who was a drummer in the Revolution.
