My paternal grandfather, William (Willy) Albert Chabot, sailed from Bremen, Germany with his mother, sister Hulda, and younger brother Paul aboard the ship SS America. They arrived at Baltimore, Maryland on December 2, 1882. There they were met by their adopted father, Louis Chabot, who had arrived the previous year. Willy’s birth father, Friedrich Rohnstein, had been killed in a train accident when the boy and his sister were infants. After their mother remarried, her new husband, Louis Chabot, adopted the children and raised them as his own. Louis and Friederike operated a popular confectionery shop in Maryland, where they made their own ice cream, candy, and baked goods. I have no additional information on the Rohnstein family, and have researched the Chabot surname since Willy and Hulda considered themselves Chabots first and foremost.
