The History of Remote Sensing

-The technology of remote sensing began with the invention of the camera, more than 150 years ago.
-In the 1940's, the idea of being able to look down at the earths surface came around. The first actual use of this idea was when scientists attached cameras to tethered balloons to take pictures from the sky so they could make topographic maps.
-By the first World War, cameras had been placed on airplanes to provide aerial views of large surface areas. This method of Remote Sensing remained the standard way to study the earths surface up to the 1960's.
-Satellite Remote Sensing began during the early space age, around 1946.
-The term Remote Sensing was first used in the 1950's by Mrs. Evelyn Pruitt of the US.
