GARDEN ACTVITIES
ScienceGrowing Grass:
Germinate grass seeds by placing a damp sponge
in a pie tin of water and sprinkling seeds on the
sponge. The kids will notice tiny sprouts after a few days.
Experiment by putting one sponge in the freezer, one near
a heat source, and one in a dark closet. Discuss what happens
to each group of seeds.Place several different kinds of seeds on a tray to sort by shape.
Use tweezers for a little fun.Root a sweet potato:
Push toothpicks halfway into the potato on three sides.
Place in a jar of water letting the toothpicks hold halfway out of water.Worm Farm:
Large clear jar with a wide mouth, soil, earthworms,
gravel and food for the worms-cornmeal, lettuce and cereal.
Place gravel and soil in the jar. Add worms.
Add food on top and keep soil moist but not wet.
Tape black construction paper around the outside.
You can take the paper off to look at the worms.And of course the best project is to clear a small area
on the playground and plant a garden!

Inchworm Measuring:
Book - "Inch by Inch" by Leo Lionni
Cut 2 dozen inchworms out of felt.
Cut out flowers in different heights.
Long and short stems.
How many inchworms tall is each flower?Sort beans into colored bowls.
Count how many in each bowl.
Dramatic Play ![]()
Garden Shop:
Gather pipe cleaners, plastic pots, sponge blocks,
plastic vases, colored tissue paper, cash register etc...
Make flowers with pipe cleaners and tissue paper.
Arrange in pots or vases. Let the kids set up the shop
and sell flowers to their customers.Garden Center:
Gather tools, gloves, hats, seeds and plastic
flowers, plants and pots.
Add seed catalogs and gardening books.Fruit Stand:
Lay a board on two blocks.
Add aprons, plastic fruit and vegetables,
cash register and play money.
Arts & Crafts ![]()
Flowers:
You will need muffin cup liners and pipe cleaners.
Have kids make flowers and spray with perfume.Flower Stamps:
Add different colored paint to shallow pans.
Dip fancy bows into paint and dab on paper.
Paint a stem!
Garden Games ![]()
Huckle Buckle Bean Stalk:
Use a small flower to hide.
All players cover their eyes except
for the one who hides the flower.
After it is hidden all the kids stand up
and look for the flower. Whoever finds it
does not tell the location. Instead he sits
back down and says, "Huckle Buckle Bean Stalk!"
The game continues until all the kids have found
the flower. The first child who found it gets
to hide it next time.
Garden Cooking Activity ![]()
Vegetable Soup:
Add a can of soup stock and any vegetables
the children vote on to be added.Lettuce or Spinach Roll-Ups:
On lettuce or spinach leaves spread softened
cream cheese. Sprinkle with grated carrots
or bits of ham. Roll up and eat.
