"Kenneth McAlpin (which means 'son of Alpin'), became king of the Picts and the Scots together. We do not know how he achieved this. Some say he was related to Eoganan and had a claim to the Pictish throne through one of the line of royal women. Others say he got it by treachery. However he did it, he defended the new kingdom, which became known as Scotia, vigorously against the Norsemen and against invaders from the south, and led six expeditions into England. He made Scone in Perthshire his chief town, and he was proclaimed King on the ancient Stone of Destiny. He moved the relics of the holy St. Columba from the island of Iona to a new church which he built at Dunkeld. Kenneth I ruled for 16 years (from 843 until 859). He died in 859 not in battle, nor by murder, but from a tumour. According to the law of the Scots he was succeeded by his brother, Donald I, though two of his sons, Constantine I and Aed, became Kings of Scotia later."
