Sonnet VII {Of Men}

This is one of about 20 sonnets that i had written (some in Petrarchan rhyme pattern, most in Shakespearean). I started writing them to give myself some structure, so i wouldn't ramble on, but all it ended up doing was forcing me into writing about 20 horrible poems. The lot is pretty bad, evidenced by the fact that this one is the best of the bunch.

If this is the best of all possible worlds
I shudder to think of any other place.
If you could see the pain present in my face
Or watch as my dreams unfurl
Youll understand why this earth is no pearl.
Now I know why Burns stated his case
That the best laid schemes o mice and men are laid to waste.
My optimism is sunk, and on top pain is hurled.
Dont be fooled by foolish men
Reciting their story-book endings with fairy tale lines.
They are unaware of what lies ahead, the brutal cost
That their hearts will pay when
Their dreams are discarded like orange rinds.
Life is pain and rejection and loss.
