The Family name Strohsahl                                                        This information was emailed to me from Juergen Strohsal

The spelling of our family name is records dating back to 1600th century( before abt 1580) is STROSADEL

At the time the church register set in/ begann ( at about 1580 and later) the registrars of such books were usually not familiar with the local dialect ( lower German), but the people who applied for a birth or death registration received the pronounciation in Lower German only. In Lower German ( Plattdeutsch) SADEL sounds like SOHL, therefore the registrars laid down the name into what we call Middle or High german and wrote down STROHSAHL. Remind you that at that time most of the people could neither write nor read and they usually had no means to check or correct what those people took down.

Now the area/ triangle our family name has its roots is the mouth of the river Elbe/ Cuxhvane and mouth of the river Weser. From a few villages there the family spread into other places.

STROH one can explain with STRAW but this must not be sure, maybe some experts could have another explanation but to proof you need other even more earlier entries into charters or other documents which difficulty to find SADEL indeed is a landmark/boundary within the limits of a village.

In der älteren etymologischen Fachliteratur erklärt der Forscher Josef Karlmann Brechenmacher unseren Familiennamen wie folgt : in earlier etymoligical biographical datas the scient and investigator Josef Karlmann Brechenmacher explains our family name as follows :

1. Eytmolgisches Wörterbuch der Deutschen Familiennamen von Prof. Josef Karlmann Brechenmacher aus: " Ahnenreihen aus allen deutschen Gauen." soweit die gedruckten Quellen unseres Familiennamen. Die Wurzeln der Familie

liegen im Dreieck Elbe ( Land Hadeln), heutiges Cuxhaven (Amt Ritzebüttel)

sowie Land Wursten (Weser) .Hier tritt  der Familienname vielfach und schon

sehr früh auf. Der Name hat seinen Ursprung in einer Landschaft in der

ausschließlich plattdeutsch / niederdeutsch gesprochen wurde. In der

Abflachung der niederdeutschen Aussprache wird die 2. und 3. Silbe SADEL 

langgedehnt  als

" Sohl " gesprochen. In den überlieferten geschriebenen und gedruckten

Quellen des 16. Jahrhunderts wird der Name noch mit STROSADEL aufgeführt.

Erst  durchdie Aufnahme des Namens in die Kirchenbücher und Amtsunterlagen,

ändert sich der Name zu STROHSAHL. Die Schreibkundigen dieser frühen

Unterlagen waren häufig Landfremde und somit der niederdeutscchen Sprache

nicht

mächtig. Insofern erfolgte eine Übetragung des Namens ins Hochdeutsche. und

festigte sich bald

zu STROHSAHL: Aber auch bei den Zivilbehörden haben sich später noch "Fehler

eingeschlichen" Insofern hat sich für  Zweige der Familie Namensänderung auf 

STROSAHL  oder STROHSAL

eingestellt.

Es liegt die Vermutung nahe, daß sich der Name wohl aus einer Flur- oder

Gewannenbezeichnung

ableitet.

In this region one meets the name of  Strohsahl family frequently and very

early. The family name has its origin in a landscape where people spoke low

German exclusively. They way of pronounciation of SADEL in low German exactly

meets "Sohl" . All earlier issues of  printed books showing the name

StROSADEL, only when starting to read church records the family name changed

to STROHSAHL, because the  writers of such records entries could not speak

and understand the local dialect wherefore  they put our name into its

present form. Latter registrars omitted the 2nd H and wrote STROHSAL (like my

spelling) or wrote STROSAHL.

Conclusion : the family name STROHSAHL describes a landmark/boundary.
