Can you imagine watching your family get killed and then be taken captive by the murderers? Well, that is what happens in this book, Echohawk, by Lynda Durrant.  Jonathan, a young white boy is taken captive by an Indian tribe called the Mohicans who raised him as one of them.  His English name was Jonathan, however his name was changed to Echohawk when the Indians brought him up.

Echohawk lives in rural New York in an Indian village on the Hudson (called the Muhekunetuk by the Mohican tribe) not far away from Saratoga-on-the-Hudson, a white settlement.

The environment during Echohawks time period, the early 1700s, is full of abundant trees and wildlife. Echohawks setting is not unlike present day rural New Yorks woodland by the Hudson.  This books location was crucial and fundamental to the books storyline.  It had to take place by the Hudson because Mohicans and white men lived by its side.

The main characters in this book are Echohawk, Bamaineo who was Echohawks Indian younger brother, and Glickihigan who was Echohawks Indian father.

If the story took place in a different time period, the Indians would not be there with the white men.  If it were in present day or the future, they would not have intermarried with the white men or been killed.

Echohawk and his family travel back and forth between Saratoga-on-the Hudson, a white settlement, and their village many times throughout the course of the story because they live in both locations.  They live most of their life in the Mohican village except for when they spent a winter living in Saratoga-on-the Hudson so their children can learn English.

For Echohawk learning English was more like remembering English than learning English.  After being reminded of his earlier life when coming across his burnt down former home, Echohawk is very angry.  Later, he comes to understand why the Indians had killed his family.  Oddly the reason why the Indians killed Echohawks family is never explained to the reader.
