Sarah, Adams mother, is a very strict person.  She believes that children should never be having fun, but should always be carrying out chores, reading the bible, or another type of work or religious activity.  The activities a child prefers she regards as a religious wrongdoing. Adam, as any boy would, endeavors to receive time from his parents to do whatever he pleases, but he never disobeys his mother.  Adam wants to go to the common in the middle of the night after the messenger rode through town.  Sarah disapproves of this idea purely because Adam thinks that it would be an exciting excursion.  Because Adam likes the idea, Mother must dislike it.

By modern-day standards Sarah would be considered mean, inconsiderate and unreasonable.  However, during that time period, her view of how children should live was more widespread.  Many people treated their children harshly and did not grant them any free time.  I think that all children should be allowed to enjoy life, have fun, and should not be deprived of religious freedom or be required to make religion the center of their life.  Sarah should allow Adam to make his own decisions and venture to the common.

Luckily, Adam wins the argument when Granny advises Sarah to permit Adam to go.  Granny takes advantage of her age and position in the Cooper pecking order for Adams benefit.  Granny is inconsiderate to Sarah and embarrasses her, but Sarah was interrupted in the middle of being inconsiderate to Adam.  Cooper mothers appear to believe they have a right to treat younger family members without respect and ignore their requests.  Nevertheless, the conflict is justly resolved.
