Traffic Cops, and why they suck
Every year there are thousands of murders, thefts, rapes, drug deals, kidnappings, and assorted other nastiness.  Why then are my tax dollars being used for police men to HIDE in alcoves on the highway?  Shouldn't these guys be out searching for criminals? At the very least cruising around to show a police presence? Since when is a productive citizen commuting to work a menace to society? EVEN if you assume that some policing of traffic is necessary; they sure arent going to catch that jerk who swerves all over the highway cutting everyone off, causing accidents, by HIDING.  All they are going to catch are speeders. Everyday people moving along at a speed they feel comfortable with.  The speed limits arent even the maximum safe speed... they are numbers that have been pushed down by whining special interest groups and the spineless politicians who crave their money.  Grandma's bingo club doesnt like the way these young whippersnappers are "flying" through the local streets... so lets all write letters to the mayor and get it reduced to 25mph.  I could drive through a little kids playground at 25 mph and not hit anything. The interstates are just as bad. A straight flat (frequently empty) road going 1 way, and yet we have speed limits like 55 or 65. Nobody obeys the speed limit. The question isnt "do you drive over the limit" but "how high over do you go". For most people its 5 to 10, not because they couldnt drive faster but because thats the number where you start to risk police activity. When EVERY driver is going 70 mph , EVERY DAY, ALL DAY LONG, that just might be a sign that 65 is not the 'maximum safe speed'.  But this isnt about speed limits, its about those worthless wastes of human skin called traffic cops. They take the authority we give them as citizens and lord it over us for the most mundane and harmless offenses.  Meanwhile somebody is getting mugged downtown, or raped while out jogging, or killed by a paranoid burgler.  But I'm sure glad Officer Useless is keeping my streets safe from productive people trying to get to work on time. I was really scared about that.
