Bald eagles in this part of Alaska are quite common. I have seen them soar over Erin's school, soar past the homes of friends, and generally be everywhere. However, if you want to view a LOT of bald eagles up close, there are two places that eagles gather. One, interestingly, is the town dump. Eagles are indeed scavengers, and will fight with the gulls for dump yummies. My favorite place to view the eagles is in Homer. Most of these pictures were taken in Homer, at the end of the Homer Spit. They are EVERYWHERE there. You can get very close to them. They wait there to be fed. A lot of fishing charter boats dock at Homer, and the eagles like to get their fill. They are truly huge birds. The younger eagles are brown and speckled. The adult eagles, male and female, look alike. They can catch a fish flying right down to the water with their talons pointed straight at them, and then pick them up and fly away with them. Their wingspan is so impressive. Some are beautifully impressive, and at this time of year, some can be kind of mangy. But they are wonderful to look at! |
