The Homer Spit |

The Homer Spit sits at the very tip of Homer. This is where you can view the eagles. We were standing at the top of the hillside overlooking Homer Spit when we took this picture. It was kind of cloudy, so you cannot see the incredible mountains and glaciers in the background very well. I have to say, while standing on the hillside overlooking this view, I got a little panicked from the height. Many fishing charters leave from Homer, and there are many, many little "artsy" shops along the Spit. We like to walk around on the docks and look at all of the boats in the summertime. |

This picture from last year shows you the mountain view from the end of Homer Spit as a huge ferry passes by. Erin is in the foreground. |

These signs are all over the Homer Spit. There is only one way off the spit in the event of a tsunami. I have to say, I was pretty mindful of the possiblity this year. In the event of a large tsunami (this entire area, after all, is on the "Ring of Fire") the Homer Spit would most likely be completely destroyed. I am also mindful of the fact that the 9.3 Good Friday Earthquake happened 41 years ago here in Alaska. You can view some pretty amazing pictures of the damage that earthquake caused by using search engines and typing in "1964 Alaska Earthquake". |
