He came from Orange Co. Indiana to Jefferson County Iowa March 1852 and built a log cabin on his claim. Among the first settlers in the different townships of Wayne County were Benton Township - James Harvey Crawford. Trees were scarce in Iowa and no
lumber for a door. His Wife, Mary Anna was very unhappy about the wolves that howled around the cabin on winter nights with only a quilt or a blanket over the doorway. James Harvey went by team and wagon to Ottumwa, Iowa, 80 or 90 miles, and brought
back lumber for a door. In 1875, James built a new house.
