Nicholas Pfeifer was born in the year of 1786, January 6th in Hessen Darmstadt, Germany and died May 18, 1848. He was by occupation a carpenter. When a young man, he was united in marriage to Katherine Horn who was born in the year of 1794, also of
Hessen Darmstadt, Germany. On June 23 1846 together with their family of seven children they boarded a Holland steamer at Gernsheim, going down the Rhine, arriving at Rottendam the 25th and from there to Amsterdam and then 80 miles farther to Nevendib,
arriving June 27. There they waited until July 24, when they started on their voyage across the ocean on board the sailboat, Superb. The voyage lasted 56 days. On September 17, they reached the city of New York, on the 18th they were transferred to a
steamer to Troy and Buffalo, and then to Sandusky, Ohio, arriving October 30th. Coming to Wyandot County in November and purchasing a quarter section of wild land in Salem Township. Mr. Pfeifer began life in his new home after the manner of the early
pioneers, erecting a small hewed-log cabin which answered the purpose for which intended until replaced by a larger and more comfortable structure a number of years later. He was not destined, however, to realize his anticipation in the new home to
which he fell a victim to disease a short time after his arrival and within 18 months his body was consigned to the earth from whence it came, at the age of 62 years. He was a good man, a pious member of the Lutheran Church and he left as a priceless
heritage to his children, the memory of a good name and a blameless character. Mrs. Pfeifer survived her husband a number of years reaching the advanced age of 82 years before summoned to meet her companion in the other world. Of the nine children born
to Nicholas and Katherine Pfeifer, two died in the old country. The other seven accompanied their parents to this country and reasched useful stations in life. Following are the names of the children, who have all now departed this life:
Elizabeth Katherine Tracht, Galion, Ohio.
Katherine Binau.
Margaret Karg.
Barbara Pfeifer, departed at the age of 23 years.
Jacob Pfeifer.
Mary Schwilck.
Peter Pfeifer.

His was a hard lot to go through, the land being all a wilderness and not at all used to such hard work. But patience and hope and trust in God helped him to build an upright character. So that we can say, The Lord has done all things well, He alone be
praised.
