Raccoons and Fireflies
(A Poem By Jason Sinkhorn)

We must've laid out there that whole summer night
Because when we got in the truck it sure was bright
It may have just been the moon and the stars
Of course it might've been the headlights on our cars
We danced around in the summer rain
The people around thought we were insane
We kept time to the music in our head
We must've heard different tunes cause my feet are dead

But it was the most romantic time I've been in
I wouldn't trade it for the world but maybe for a twin
I keep thinking about fishing in the pond full of the fish
And how we tried to make a stringer out of a candy dish
Do you know the memory that sticks out most in my mind?
Chasing raccoons round trees and batting at the fireflies

We might not be able to remember the whole trip
I thought it was fun playing two people on one team Battleship
We brought so many ice cream flavors I couldn't choose
We had lunch at midnight in cartoon print Underoos
Not many couples can just sit and brag about
Sculpting a peanut butter and jelly sandwich into a rainbow trout
We carried a backpack full of supplies we would need
Like a Coleman lantern and a saxophone reed
I like to look back and reflect at times
About chasing raccoons round trees and batting the fireflies

I know you've left now and we can't go back
But I'll dwell on the good times I keep in this sack
Pictures and memories of long time gone
And a poster of Elvis I stole from your hair salon
I'll never let go of the love we had shared
I think our only problem is that neither of us cared
Maybe all of answers to the secrets of life lie
In the mysterious raccoon and the clever firefly
