The phone clicked as Arianna dropped the receiver back
onto the cradle. Turning onto her side she curled her
knees up to her chest, her arms wrapping around them.
Her chin trembled with the effort of holding back the
tears that threatened to fall from her honey brown
eyes. Justin was with Alexis; she needed him more than
anything in this world and he was with Alexis. A lone
tear slid down her cheek and she wiped at it angrily,
she wouldn’t cry. She had to be strong…if she was
going to fight this, then she had to be strong.

“AJ?” Alexis said, her green eyes dark with concern.
Sighing she turned her phone off and looked at Justin.
He was puzzled and it showed on his face, “Where
exactly are we going tonight?”
“New York.” Going to her bedroom Alexis pulled a
duffel bag from her closet. “AJ’s sick and in the
hospital.”
“WHAT?” yelled Justin. “What the hell do you mean
she’s sick? What’s wrong with her? When did she go? Oh
my gawd, is she really sick?”
Alexis stared at him, “Justin.” She waved her hand in
front of his face until he looked at her. “You need to
calm down. You have to go to your house and pack a
bag. I’ll be at your house in an hour and we’ll go to
the airport and get a flight out.”
“Will she be okay?” Justin whispered, his eyes wide
and scared.
“I don’t know,” Alexis looked away. “I don’t know, J.”
Nodding his head Justin turned and ran from the
apartment all the way to his Escalade. Revving the
engine he sped the entire way to his house and slammed
it into park. Jumping out he ran into the house and up
the stairs. As he filled his bag with random clothes
he pressed, “play” on the answering machine and let
them play through. Tears filled his eyes as he heard
Arianna’s soft voice fill the room. She was sick in
some cold hospital where she didn’t know anybody and
he had been at Alexis pissed at her because she had
followed her dream. He fell to his knees as sobs shook
his body and he covered his face with his hands. He
couldn’t lose her…she was a handful and a pain in the
ass but he loved her more than anything in the world.
Gulping in air he forced himself to stop crying. He
didn’t know what was wrong with her yet, it could be
nothing. But Alexis’ face had paled and she looked
terrified when she was talking to AJ. Standing up he
went back to his bag zipping it closed. Pressing erase
on the machine he hurried down the stairs.

Arianna watched as the two doctors conversed privately
in the corner of her room. They would glance over at
her every few seconds and made her feel like some
specimen they were studying. Glaring at them she
folded her arms across her chest and sighed. She hated
hospitals, they were full of sick, dying people and
she’d always hated visited them for any reason. She
smirked at that thought; she was one of the sick
people now. Her smile faded when the doctors
approached her bed.
“How are you, Arianna?” the taller one asked. His face
was kind and gentle and he reminded her of her
grandfather.
“Other than the fact that I’m in a hospital bed with a
tubes coming out of arms and nobody telling me what’s
wrong with me, I’m just peachy,” Arianna replied
sarcastically.
Briefly glancing at one another the doctors both
smiled at Arianna. The taller one introduced them.
“I’m Dr. Wall and this is Dr. Hannah. We’ll be working
with you on your stay here at NYG.”
Arianna’s eyes narrowed, “My stay? How long will I be
here?”
“We don’t know yet,” Dr. Hannah said, with a smile
that reminded AJ of an obnoxious hyena.
“Do you know what’s wrong with me?” demanded
Arianna.
Dr. Wall sat on the edge of the bed. “Well, we’ll need
to run some more tests and…”
“Just tell me what the hell is wrong with me!” Arianna
shrieked.
“You have leukemia,” Dr. Hannah blurted out as Dr.
Wall glared at him.
Arianna’s eyes widened as she stared at the doctor,
“Wha-wha-what?” Leukemia. But I…I can’t have….cancer.”
