Read Chapter 3 - drafting and planning a paper Essay #1 - You may pick any of the Writing Assignments listed at the ends of Chapters 1, 2 or 3 for this first essay - see Instructor's Notes for details - due no later than Feb 13.

Read Chapter 5 - methods of essay development

Begin reading Chapter 6 - argumentative writing

Essay #2 - You may pick an "argue" topic from either Chapter 5 or 6 for this paper - see Instructor's Notes for details - due no later than Feb 27.

Finish reading Chapter 6    
Weeks Eight and Nine
Feb 28 - March 19
Read Chapter 7 - paragraph development Essay #3 - Write about one of your holidays.  Be sure to read these stories:  Family:   "The One Social Glue," "Five Myths About Immigration," or "LA Frontera" - due no later than March 19.  

SPRING BREAK - March 8 - 13

Week Ten
March 20 - March 26
Read Chapter 8 - sentences Essay #4 - Write about someone you may know who has had cancer, describe your emotions after reading "The Painter's Eye," or write a prose story similar to "The Knife" - due no later than April 2.  
Week Eleven
March 27 - April 2
Read Chapter 9 - diction

Start thinking about your research paper.   Email your research topic to me.

Essay #5 - Write about one of your embarrassing moments in school or something you have taken for granted.  Be sure to read "The Microscope" and "Knothole Cavern" - due no later than April 16.  
Weeks Twelve and Thirteen
April 3 - April 16
Read Chapter 13 - research paper Research paper - see Instructor's Notes for details  
Weeks Fourteen
April 17 - April 23
  Work on research paper.  
Week Fifteen
April 24 - April 30
  Research paper due no later than April 30  
Week Sixteen
May 1 - May 7
  Reflective paper due no later than May 7
