The Learning Guide A Learning Guide is a collection of resources, activities and directions prepared by the teacher to assist a student in learning how to perform a particular task. The Learning Guide is not a required part of a CBVE curriculum, but it contains all of the elements required in CBVE. The Learning Guide contains, in addition to other things, the written performance standards and written performance test for the one task for which it is written..
To be an "approvable CBVE Curriculum," four characteristics must be present: 1. A validated task listing 2. Written performance standards 3. Written performance tests for each task 4. A School-wide reporting system
What's in a Learning Guide? A Learning Guide is a formal plan intended to guide the instruction of a single task. It consists of the following things. Each one begins on a separate page. Page 1: Introductory Page It contains a motivational introduction to the task. Page 2: Acknowledgement Page This page contains the author's name and any "dedication" information. Page 3: Objective Page This page consists of the task, the conditions under which it is to be performed, the materials supplied, and the degree of completeness required. It also presents the task analysis, breaking the task it=nto its enabling objectives. Page 4: Learning Activities Page for each Enabling Objective (EO), starting with #1. Here, the curriculum writer lists activities that could be performed by the teacher, including any specific resources required for performing the activities. Obviously, activities should be selected to appeal to all learning styles, and utilize as many instructional techniques as possible. This is where the writer's creativity is most valuable. Page 5: Instruction Sheet for the Enabling Objective, again, starting with #1. Instruction Sheets are simply that. "How-to pages, giving directions, illustrations, diagrams, special safety precautions, photographs, charts, or other visual aids that make the learning of the knowledge presented in the EO easier or clearer for the student. There may be several Instruction Sheets for each EO, so from now on, the pages will not be described by number here on this page. Next page: Self-Check for Enabling Objective (starting with #1) This is simply a brief Knowledge Test. It may be any type or any length, depending on the complexity of the enabling objective. Short answer, open-ended, essay question, oral, written, corrected instantly or returned later, or any other format is acceptable. Next Page: Self-Check Answer Key for E.O. (starting with #1) This is the answer key for the knowledge test on the previous page. If a student performs successfully on this test, he or she is presumed ready to go on to the next E.O.
