My Rating:

Steven McKray- Casper Van Dien! A shark expert who leaves his comfy university to investigate the recent slew of shark attacks in Africa. He helps bring Lawrence Rhodes' operation to a halt.

Mani- (Pronounced as Man-nie) Local fisherman who's now a cab driver due to lack of fish in the sea. He becomes a loyal friend to Steve and helps take out Rhodes' operation.

Miles- Scientist that's trying to create a miracle drug from sharks. Due to his experiments, the sharks in the area become non-stop eating machines. He ends up getting a harpoon through his chest.

Mark- Diver that becomes shark fodder in the film's beginning. Apparently he was on to some secret, because he is suddenly tossed into shark infested waters and eaten.

Corine- Mark's sister. She's trying to find out who killed her beloved brother and why. She takes out one of the crooked cops at the movie's end.

The Crooked Cops- Two high ranking police officials that do Rhodes' dirty work. Both are killed in an all out brawl with Steven, Corine, Mani, and a bunch of local fishermen.

Lawrence Rhodes- Ernie Hudson! Local aristrocrat who's seeking to buy out all the local properties so an oil company can come in and drill. To do this he puts "thumpers" all around the surrounding beaches and lagoons to draw in sharks. He gets chomped by a Great White at the film's end.

The Sharks- Mostly just stock footage of Great White's... I mean... actual sharks that have become mindless killers with a bottomless pit for a stomach. Many get gutted by Miles while others are harpooned or shot by other cast members. I bet all of the world's Animal Rights Activists loved this movie.

Well this movie was the saving grace on a Sunday night. I watched this along with The Howling 3: The Marsupials which was painfully bad. Although I didn't have the time to review that this month, I'm sure I'll get around to reviewing Howling 3 eventually. Anyways as the movie opens we see Mark coming up from a dive. As he sits down in his boat and is sending some e-mail, he's assaulted by two men who then proceed to cut his arm and throw him overboard. After some stock footage of a Great White, Mark gets chomped.
Mark's e-mail was being sent to his pal Steve. After getting a portion of the e-mail since all of it wasn't sent, Steve decides to go down to Africa and see what's going on. While down there we meet the rest of the cast. Mani the reckless taxi/boat driver, Corine, Mark's grieving and stubborn sister, the graciously kind Lawrence Rhodes, and Steve's suspicious looking acquaintance, Miles. Well as the film progresses, several random tourists are attacked by sharks, but saved by Steve. Every time this happens, he dives mindlessly into the water, hits the shark with some kind of tool or weapon, and then pulls the victim to safety.
Well after discovering several "thumpers" in a nearby lagoon, and also discovering a strange protein in the body of a dissected shark, Steven questions Miles. At first Miles denies all accusations that he's behind the recent slew of shark attacks. Later on we discover that he has been working on a miracle drug made from sharks. This explains the strange chemical protein in the sharks, as well as their ultra-aggressive behavior. But who's been laying thumpers around the shallow shore lines and in the lagoon?
Well Steve and Corine apparently get too close to the culprit since two crooked police officials (that killed Mark), are chasing them. After evading the police, our two heroes (hero and heroine to be exact) soon discover the awful truth. Lawrence Rhodes, the wealthy and seemingly sincere fellow of the town, had placed the thumpers to drive off tourists and ruin the only business that keeps this little town going, the fishing business. Why would anyone do want to do this?
Lawrence does this so that he can buy up everyone's property and sell it to an oil company, who has recently discovered an oil deposit in the area. Well Steve escapes with the aid of Mani, and the two return to the town and tell all the local fishermen of Lawrence's heinous deed. This leads to an all out confrontation between Lawrence's goons, and the fishermen. Well basically everyone is either knocked out or dead, except for Steven who chases after Lawrence. The two battle inside a helicopter and fall out into the ocean below. As they both cling to a water buoy, Rhodes gets chomped. And so the town is closing up, but everyone gets to sell their property to the oil company. On top of that Steve will be returning to the village to try and "fix" the shark problem, while also starting a relationship with Corine. And so everything is going to be all right... until SHARK ATTACK 2!

Mani: "Independent woman huh?"
Steven: "Tell me about it."
