My Rating:

Yoshinari- Young naval officer who wants to join the expedtion in search of the elusive "floating atoll." He (and the rest of Japan) gets more than he bargained for. Near the end, it seems that he and Dr. Nagamine may be starting a relationship.

Asagi- Steven Seagal's daughter! Young girl that has a psychic link with Gamera. She gives the super turtle the strength to keep on fighting.

Dr. Mayumi Nagamine- Bird expert who is called in by the Japanese government to deal with the "giant birds." She does her damnest to capture the "giant birds," but fails at the stupid governments expense.

Inspector Oosako- Who dubbed this guy? Whiny inspector who sticks by Dr. Nagamine for most of the film. However, he does help come up with the first plan to capture the Gyaos.

Gamera- The giant, fire-ball spouting, rocket-powered turtle is back (though he is no longer "the friend of children."). He must destroy the evil Gyaos and must also protect himself from a misguided military.

Gyaos- No longer a dumb fox/bat creature but a sleek reptilian bird monster that shoots a sonic beam from it's mouth. Originally there were three, but two had a run-in with Gamera and met a quick end. The final Gyaos wreaks havoc on Japan and brings the country to it's knees, until Gamera arrives and destroys it once and for all.

Well this is the third Gamera flick that I had ever seen. "Gamera vs. Guiron" was the first one and I didn't particularly like it, but I didn't hate it either. Then there was "Gamera vs. Barugon", special effects wise...it was laughable. How could Gamera ever amount to the greatness of Godzilla? He can't! But with this movie he came pretty damn close. As the film opens, a naval vessel carrying plutonium runs aground on "a floating atoll." The world is stunned and dumbfounded by this occurence. Yoshinari was the man who mapped the course of the said naval vessel and begs to go on an expedition to find the atoll.
He ends up going after cooking dinner and cleaning house for the man who is leading the expedition. Meanwhile an expedition to Himagami Island results in disaster as everyone on the island is devoured by "giant birds." Dr. Mayumi Nagamine goes there along with Inspector Oosako, as well as a large group of police officials, to find out what happened to her father. She arrives and discovers that everyone is missing, the village on the island is destroyed, and finds her dad's pen in a pile of bird sh*t! Well they see the "birds" heading towards the Japanese mainland and give chase. The "giant birds'" sensitivity to light is discovered at this point, as is the intentions of the Japanese government. Those morons want to capture the "birds," despite the creatures' apparent appetite for human beings! A plan is then constructed to capture the "birds" in a stadium whose dome can be opened and closed.
Back out on the ocean, Yoshinara and the expedition have found the atoll and have dug up a stone tablet, as well as small fetus shaped runes. Suddenly the atoll begins moving, sending everyone on it tumbling into the sea. Yoshinari falls in and "before his wondrous eyes does appear, a turtle with tusks, grinning from ear to ear." Gamera then makes his way towards the coast of Japan. Back at the stadium, things are going according to plan. But the military only captures two of the Gyaos, the third flies off...only get the smackdown from Gamera (quite literally I assure you). Gamera stomps his way to the stadium and tries to break through the dome. The two Gyaos at this point have awakened from their drug induced slumber and use their sonic beams to escape from their steel cages.
Gamera then rockets after them as everyone looks on in awe. For the remainder of the film, Gamera chases down the Gyaos and attempts to kill them both. He destroys one with a well aimed fireball midfilm, but is unable to get the other one. This is mostly the fault of the Japanese military, who have gravely mistaken Gamera as the enemy. The only thing keeping Gamera going is Asagi. Due to a small rune given to her by Yoshinara, she now has a psychic link with the terrapin titan. Gyaos has grown incredibly large and powerful by now, and after eating a train full of teenagers, the Japanese government finally declares war upon the voracious beast. The use of S.A.M. missiles on Gyaos proves to be ineffective, because no one expected it to take evasive manuevers! Gyaos then builds a nest on the remainder of Tokyo Tower but is dethroned a day later by Gamera.
A huge battle ensues as the two monsters knock each other around. (You know it's a lot of fun watching a giant turtle clumsily waddle backwards into buildings when it's hit.) Then both take the battle to the skies. Gamera starts pursuit, but the tables turn very quickly. Gamera flies all the way out of earth's atmosphere, followed by Gyaos. The two monsters grapple and fall to the Earth. Gyaos blasts off it's left leg with it's sonic beam and flies off, as Gamera falls to what seemed to be his complete and utter demise (with all those explosions... you'd figure he'd be long gone). But with the combined love and energy of Asagi and her father, Gamera rises from the flames, and destroys Gyaos in a western type shoot out of monstrous proportions. Gamera then departs for the sea and a long sleep...until he's ever needed again.

Yoshinari: "The last hope, Gamera. We bestow it to the cradle of time. Hmmm..."
Asagi: "It will awaken with Gyaos, the shadow of evil."

Reporter: "Never before has Japan faced such an enemy. S.A.M. missiles wait for the first defensive attack in the history of modern Japan! Will they stop Gamera!?"

Asagi: "He'll come! Gamera will come again!"
