McKenna Ray Bravenight - Carmen Electra! Once she learns of her sister Emma's untimely death, McKenna returns to her home. She quickly rekindles a relationship with Henry and comes to grips with her role in Native American folklore. She becomes "The Raven" and fights for truth justice and the (Native) American way!
Papi - An old Indian medicine man and McKenna's father. He tries to guide her on the path of the Raven and also serves as the film's narrator.
Emma - Shauna Sand Lamas! McKenna's busty and very good-looking sister. She is murdered by Cole, but makes frequent appearances as a ghost that mocks and annoys McKenna.
Henry - The local lawman who can't seem to actually enforce the law. He's brutally beaten and urinated on by Cole, but thankfully McKenna uses her special Raven powers to completely heal Henry and get the stains out. In the film's finale, Henry tries to aid McKenna against Nora and receives a fatal stab wound. He dies but is resurrected through the power of the Sacred Crescent.
Nora - Henry's current love interest until McKenna comes back into his life. Angry and bitter, Nora starts shacking up with Cole and is eventually murdered by him. Like McKenna, Nora is revived and gains supernatural powers. Nora becomes "The Wolf" and makes a nuisance of herself until she's defeated by McKenna.
The Route 33 Serial Killer - Lawrence Lanoff! Serial Killer that attempts to use his surgical tools on Nora, only to have the tables turned.
Ricky Dean and Dougie - Cole's two cronies who are lacking in the intelligence department. Both of them are murdered by Nora.
Cole - The local bad boy and crystal meth supplier. I sort of expected him to become a super-villain because he's the cruelest and most evil person in this movie! After he's arrested and locked up, Cole is murdered in his jail cell by Nora.
When my buddy Duane over at B-Movie Central
came up with this roundtable theme I was at a loss for words. Not since our first roundtable
have we done anything remotely risque so it was a welcome change. My only problem with this
roundtable was choosing a movie with a busty lead star. After hours of indecision I finally made
my choice, Chosen One: Legend of the Raven. I had only seen it once and the only thing
I could recall about the film was that Carmen Electra was in it, and that she got naked! (Oh come
on now, I am a guy!) After watching it again, I realized why I had pretty much forgotten the
movie... it's terrible!
McKenna Bravenight returns home after her sister Emma is murdered. She only plans on staying
for the funeral but that doesn't quite pan out. McKenna's old flame, Henry, shows up
and starts putting the moves on her. That's all well and good, but you see, Henry has been
bedding down with Nora up to this point. Once Nora finds out that he's spending a lot of time
at McKenna's place, a chain reaction begins. Nora starts hitting the booze and taking crystal
meth, and begins a downward spiral into self-degradation and alcoholism. McKenna begins
making some changes herself. Her father, Papi gives her the Sacred Crescent, the talisman that
her sister had long guarded. This charm has special powers and it quickly turns McKenna into a
milk-swilling nymphomaniac.
She and Henry soon begin fornicating on a regular basis and these scenes are truly the high
points of the film. In their first sexual encounter, Henry gets so worked up that he uses a
chair to smash through a window in McKenna's house. Granted she did some teasing and used
her special powers to seduce him, but couldn't she have just unlocked the front door and let
him in? This leads to a quick and rather well done soft-core porno scene. It's quick, it's intense,
it's erotic, and highly rewindable. Unfortunately we have to wait another half hour for the next
sex scene. Meanwhile, Nora starts becoming a little hostile towards Henry. This is best illustrated
when she aids Cole in brutally beating her former lover. To add insult to injury, Cole urinates on Henry,
kidnaps him, and then screws Nora while Henry watches from the back of Cole's pickup truck. Was
all that really necessary? And how can these two manage to assault a police officer and not
suffer any major consequences?
Afterwards, Nora and Cole dump Henry off at McKenna's house and drive-off. This is where McKenna
gets to use her newly acquired powers (with a little instruction from her sister's ghost)
to heal Henry (and make all the blood on his face suddenly
disappear! Thanks Calgon!). McKenna then saunters off in search of those responsible for the
assault. Using her keen powers of "hearing evil" she finds Nora, Cole, Dougie, and Ricky
Dean out in the woods. She hides behind a nearby tree and spies on them but her cover is blown
after she's hit with a ricocheting bullet. McKenna flees for her life and comes upon a pit in the
ground. She grabs a nearby (conveniently placed) shovel and wards off her attackers until Nora
blasts her with a shotgun. Nora starts reveling over McKenna's demise but ends up suffering
the safe fate. As she's celebrating, Cole raises his shotgun and fills Nora with buckshot.
This is not the end of the tale, as both
women are resurrected overnight by the power of the Sacred Crescent. McKenna is the guardian
of said sacred charm so she becomes "The Raven." Nora however is drawn to the dark-side and
becomes "The Wolf." The movie picks up the pace here a little bit as it jumps back and forth
between the film's future combatants. Nora goes on a miniature onslaught and kills, Dougie, Ricky
Dean, Cole, and the "Route 33 Serial Killer" (played by director Lawrence Lanoff). McKenna in the
meantime dons a skintight, silver bodysuit (with a few trimmings) and does a little crime-fighting.
She also manages to have another soft-core sex scene with Henry as well. This time, McKenna
heats things up by spilling milk all over her body, thus initiating the best part of the film! (And keep
your eye on that milk bottle she's holding. At some point, it magically fills itself back
up again!) I never knew that milk was an aphrodisiac!
At this point, the cast is down to four people (if you include the always omniscient Papi) which
means that it's time for the climatic battle between good and evil. Henry and McKenna confront
Nora at a bar where Henry is fatally wounded. This leads to the first and final battle between
the film's two super-nymphos and it's rather anti-climatic. While quick cuts and lots of
close-ups work well with a sex scene (which Lanoff must excel at by now), they do not work
well during a fight scene. It also doesn't help that the fight is poorly choreographed and
poorly lit either. McKenna of course emerges victorious and, as we discover at the very end,
has resurrected Henry with the power of the Sacred Crescent. Wait, isn't there only supposed to
be one chosen one? I really don't think there can be an exception to that...
Chosen One: Legend of the Raven is a movie with a serious identity crisis. It tries to be a super-heroine/fantasy
film, then it tries to be a soft-core porno, then it leans toward being a drama, and occasionally
turns into a sleazy exploitation film. All this mixing of genres isn't a bad thing. It
shows that someone was making a creative attempt to appeal to a wider audience. However, if that
is the case, then the idea backfired. To truly pull something off like this, you need a capable
director and a good cast. Lawrence Lanoff does a decent job as the director of this film, but
his main area of expertise is soft-core porn and it shows. The two main sex scenes in the film
are well done, however the rest of the movie, especially the action sequences, look
poor and amateurish.
The cast of Chosen One... is a mixed bag and a few decent performances can be found.
Carmen Electra is terrible in this movie and probably only got the role for her good looks and
large breasts. How she even became affiliated with this film is beyond me, but my guess is that
she owed someone a favor (or needed some rent money). In contrast, Tim Bagley who plays Ricky
Dean does a pretty good job in this flick. Though he only has a small role as a comic relief
flunky, he manages to be a rather likeable and sympathetic character. Sadly, the same is not
true for the remainder of the cast. So if you have the urge to actually watch this movie, it's
probably just to see Carmen Electra naked. If that's the case, be sure to follow my handy
Things to Watch For section below. That way you won't have to watch the whole movie,
unless you really want to.
Henry: "You can't resist me, can you?"
McKenna: "Not with your big ass on top of me."
Narrator: "McKenna's powers were growing faster than her ability to understand
them. She found herself suddenly able to hear at great distances. Especially the sounds of
evil."
(Reviewer's Note: So what kind of sound does evil make exactly?)
Cole: "What a waste of a perfectly good piece of ass!"
