The Characters

Dr. John Karmedy- The Chief of Gemini Command. He believes that the supermonsters are here to destroy mankind (the man is simply a genius!). He gives orders and advice to the Gemini squad.

Captain Jim Starbuck - The strongheaded leader of the Gemini squad. He can combine with Gem to form Gemini!

Lt. Gem Starbuck - Jim's equally strongheaded sister. She can combine with Jim to form Gemini!

Lt. Jerry Fordham - The chubby guy who's third in the chain of command. He pilots a small bulldozer vehicle and loves playing a hero.

Lt. Wallace Singer - The scientific guy of the squad. He pilots the Gemini 2 hovercraft and has a pet sloth. (Just thought I'd throw that bit of information in there.)

Gemini - Jim and Gem bionically combine to form the superhuman Gemini. But they can do this only for 3 1/2 minutes or they will both die (kind of like the time restraint on Ultraman).

Emperor Tyrannus - A talking, telepathic, Tyrannosaurus! He sends his minions, the supermonsters, to attack and destroy mankind. All of his efforts to wipe out humanity are thwarted by the Gemini Command.

The Supermonsters - Talking dinosaurs who have the ability to spit laser beams and fire. They also have the ability to control animals. Their mission: to wipe out humanity with extreme prejudice.

The Plot

Trying to blend animation and live action does work. Just look at Who Framed Roger Rabbit. But unfortunately it didn't work for this one. Dinosaurs have survived and are living beneath the Earth's crust. Now one of them, Emperor Tyrannus, has decided that the time is right to take back what was once theirs, thus starting the Attack of the Supermonsters. The attack begins with a T-Rex going to the surface and transforming all the dogs in the city (what city it is we never find out) into red ravenous beasts. While this attack is commencing the Gemini Command is deployed on the scene to save the day.

They zap the red dogs changing them back to normal and battle the fire-breathing T-Rex. To defeat the rubbery beast, Jim and Gem combine into Gemini as their aircraft morphs (a precursor if you will to The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers). As Gemini battles the "supermonster," Wallace and Jerry in the hovercraft and dozer hold off red dogs and save some school children. Then the Gemini air craft decapitates the T-Rex, which causes it to explode. So the Gemini squad returns back to base and waits for the next attack. They don't have to wait too long because an army of giant bats (on strings) and a huge Pteranodon have invaded "the city." The very fake looking bats are blown up and the Pterandon is defeated by Gemini after a long hard-fought battle. This is where I began to get bored with the movie.

What really ticked me off was that nothing new ever occurred. A monster attacks, the Gemini Command hop into their designated vehicles, they fight the monster, separate into different vehicles, Jim and Gem become Gemini and defeat the monster. This whole scenario ends up as a painful deja vu (and flashbacks back to old episodes of the Power Rangers). So then we get more of the same as a Stegosaurus that shoots eye beams and controls rats (with the use of the rubbery plates on his back) goes on the rampage. His plates are lopped off and he's sliced up by Gemini (then like all the other supermonsters, the Stegosaurus explodes). Soon after, a Styracosaurus (incorrectly called a Triceratops) attacks "the city." The Gemini squad uses some rockets and sends the cowardly beast back to Emperor Tyrannus.

What happens next comes as no surprise. The Styracosaurus returns with an ally, namely a T-Rex that sprays radioactive smoke and red fireballs from it's flopping maw. So the two giant dinosaurs engage in battle with the Gemini squad, and actually come close to winning! During the battle, Jim's bionic chip (!) is damaged but he and Gem still transform into Gemini. This is a huge risk since the damaged chip could kill the brother and sister team! Luckily our heroes defeat the two "supermonsters" and survive in the process. And so the Gemini Command has saved mankind from annihilation, but will the Supermonsters return? Who cares?

Looking back, Attack of the Supermonsters seems like some cinematic experiment gone horribly wrong. The mixture of rubber monster suits, some cheap miniatures, and animation just left a bad taste in my mouth. Also, in the opening minutes of Attack of the Supermonsters, there are a variety of cool creatures (one of which bears a striking resemblence to Baragon) that aren't even seen later in the movie! What gives?! On top of that, this movie commits the crime of redundancy by reusing footage and not adding any type of twist to the plot. So is there anything good about Supermonsters? Well the jubilant musical score heard throughout is pretty catchy; it was stuck in my head for hours. Otherwise, there's nothing really great about it, but it is one of a kind. That alone may give you some incentive to sit through it, but I wouldn't suggest it.

Memorable Lines

Police Officer: "All the dogs in this sector have turned into red monsters! Don't tell me it's not possible! I'm telling you they're monsters!"

Jim: "Jim!"
Gem: "Gem!"
Jim and Gem: "Gemini!"

Little Girl: "I'm gonna get you, you ratty rat rat!"

Wallace: "Look! Their turning into mice cubes!"
